I have sent the TP&WD an email and I was told that there was alot of public land in the Panhandle. I was just wondering if anyone here hunted that land. I am looking for mainly dove and upland birds, so dont worry deer hunters. I know most do not want to give up there spot and I am not looking for that because I will find my own. I was just wondering if any one hunted there with any success. I have also been told that alot of the farmers up there are more that willing to trade hunting privlages for labor help. Has anyone done this? Thanks for reading and any help is appreciated.

Chris - who told you there was A LOT of Public Hunting Land in the Panhandle? There is some, but majority of the state is privately-owned.

Chris, when I was in school up there we hunted nothing but farmers land. just start driving, when you see a place that looks good or see a farmer out and about just ask them if you can walk through their fields...most are real cool about that

there is also a county up there somewhere (cant remember where) you pay the chamber of commerce $40 I think and you can hunt anywhere in that area. Farmers allow it to help the community raise money.

Attention rickym, this is not a troll post, just a good hearted fun type of post

There are two chunks in the Panhandle that I know of, but you will have to check with the Feds to find out what can be hunted and when.

Those are: Lake Meridith National Recreation Area, North-NorthEast of Amirillo in Hutchison,Moore, and Potter counties, approximately 44,000 acres, and,

Rita Blanca National Grasslands, North of Dalhart, in the corner formed by the New Mexico and oklahoma State lines, approximately 72,000 acres in the Texas portion.

Those are the ones I know of.

Isn't there some by Paducah and up on the Canadian river?

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

There are some TP&W Wildlife Management Areas, but they operated under pretty strict controls, and both the Matador(28,000+ acres), North of Paducah in Cottle county, and the Gene Howe(5800+ acres) N.E. of Canadian in Hemphill county, are used in the Public Hunting Lands draw hunts.

Even though they are classed as Public Land, they are not that easy to access for anything but designated species at designated times.

theres no public land in san angelo, just the state park and you have to be in a drawing for it.

don't mean to start an arguement, but what do you mean there's no public hunting grounds? all of the land by twin buttes is public hunting. i go out past the EQ channel out behind the airport. hell, i'm on a first name basis with the game warden out there i hunt so much out there. last year when i got my big buck, she stopped me on my way out to make sure i was tagged and all... she's the one who told me she hadn't seen a buck that big pulled out of there.

you can call the game warden, or the san angelo parks police out there off of red bluff road... that's how i actually found out about it two years ago. there's a bunch of people that hunt out there... the land is scattered with blinds, etc. only thing that sucks is that sometimes people use your stuff! i hung a feeder out there last year and a couple of times people were hunting it when i came up... most are very nice though... they always leave when the owner shows up.

only thing is it's shotgun (with buck shot, no slugs) only, or bow. no rifles or pistols. hell, on the other side of the buttes, there's a sign that actually says, "rifle hunting not allowed, shotgun only" or something to that effect.

but i do know about the lottery system.. i am putting in for that this year.

edit,

i bet i know why you said there isn't any public land out by twin buttes... it's not listed on the texas public hunting lands website. that's because it's owned by the US Army copr of engineers. it's still legal to hunt

i said it because its already hard enough to find a place thats not overrun with people, now i got to find another place to hunt now, because before there was no one out there, now there will be tons of folks thanks alot. dont forget the gps coordinates?
