The 7-08 can be downloaded to very manageable levels if there is a problem with recoil. Hodgdon's website lists some good youth hunting loads. However, I do not think you will have a problem with it. My 8 year old son shoots one in a model 7, it is a great round.

aquired 7mm-08 in remington 788 w/ 24" barrel, loves anything in .139 grain hornady. excelent caliber, 14 year y/o son shoots it well I didn't think the 788 in 7mm-08 was ever made in anything but the carbine (18-1/2" barrel). If you have a factory 24" barrel, that's a collector's item! not factory, purchased the rifle from my brother, he had a shilen barrel put on it several years after he purchased. The gun was very accurate with the original. I replaced the heavy (ugly) wood stock with a Ram-line synthetic. Have since retired the .30-06.
