Never tried it this way. But I rigged 4 or 5 of my decoys on SUPER LONG tangle free line. I plan on running the line through a brick (with holes) to create a jerk line.

Anybody ever tried one this way?

Does it work or is it sh_tty?

My suggestion is to use a pole of some kind to secure the end. Between the line and the pole, tie in a bungee cord of some kind.

I just think you are going to pull a brick towards you during the hunt.

are you adding a bungie cord or spring of any kind? I've done that with and without a bungie cord - I think the bungie cord is necessary - otherwise you get to a point where you're either pulling the brick or you're just jerking the decoy under water and it doesn't look right.

If you're wondering specifically about tangle free line, I used 50lb monofilament only because i had some around. don't know specifically about the tangle free stuff.

Mine is a pole (one out of PVC and other an old mojo pole) with a bungee cord attached to the string. works great.

It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

What do you do with the pole? I have never used or seen a jerk string in person, and I understand you tie the bungee to the line, then tie the bungee to the pole, but what do you do with the pole?

The brick works good! I only use 1/3 of the brick (one section with the hole), then I even chipped away excess brick to make it lighter. I had a good thread on this topic not too long ago, you could do a search, some good info.

The point is that you need an anchor that you tie the bungee or spring to, then to the decoys, then the jerk cord to the blind. A pole pushed into the ground or bottom of the lake can work well and sometimes better than a heavy object because you do not have to hike in with it... The key is that the pole must be firmly in the ground.

In the past I've experimented with using a MOJO pole with a MOJO on it attached to a bungee cord, with several feet of tangle free line then attached to the string of decoys with a the jerk string attached to the lead decoy running to the blind...

It gives the appearance that the MOJO is landing behind the group that is also showing movement. You can use the MOJO pole with or without a MOJO attached...

A word of caution, if the MOJO pole is not firmly in the ground, be very careful about pulling on it as MOJO's do not do well wet... In my experiments I've had two MOJO's and one Lucky Duck fall over in the water which at the very least will ruin your batteries and likely the motor and remote as well... An inline fuse is a good thing anytime you use a MOJO.

Jerk string roadmap from anchor point to blind:

  • Heavy object, pole or tree
  • Bungee or spring either to decoys or line to decoys
  • Line to decoys (optional based on where anchor point is)
  • String of Decoys
  • Jerk string to blind

I’m having a hard time understanding the bungee cord and pole thing, what is connected to what, I think I understand, but not sure.

Here is what I do.

If I use one decoy to jerk:
1) Set decoy out in good spot, decoy has a string with weight on it like all other decoys.
2) Run line from decoy to my blind, with the line running thru a brick hole about 1/3 of the way out. The brick just keeps the line in place and under water.
3) Find a stick, stick it in the ground in the blind, tie the line to the stick in the blind. This just keeps the line out of the water so you can jerk it.

Some times with a lot of jerks, you pull the decoy in and have to move it back out, but not much of an issue for me.

If I use more than one decoy to jerk:
Same as above, but I just add some decoys with no weight to the line, and have the decoy with the weight on the end.

No I think I get it, in my step one, instead of a weight, the pole goes in the ground, bungee cord to the pole, sting from decoy to the bungee pole, all the rest the same, right?. I would think the bungee cord with have to be real thin to get it to stretch! I try to minimize the crap I have to carry.

OOOHHHH I get it.. thanks Heat,

The T post and bungee cord just make the decoys go back after you jerk it.

Just for the record, I got it before the TH post, but I'm glad you help LSU.

My Resultion to the jerk string.

Get a fishing pole and put one of your decoys on the end. Cast it out, jerk away. When it is retrieved, cast it again. Cures the fishing itch at the same time.

My jerk string set-up. Can add multiple deeks but prefer on 2. I don't use a brick. lad I took it out for a pic today. Girlfriend wadded it all up in one of my deek bags the other day. I use a collapsable anchor. Yikes, picture didn't do it justice.

sig1921,

I was wondering how the swivel set up on that works as well as how well it packs. I considered getting it as the pictures seem to be pretty representative of ducks swimming but I was really hoping to find out if it was the real deal or not. Thanks for the information.

No Choke,

Is the yellow component in your image a float and if so, why? Does it keep your line from tangling when you throw it out? Also, is that a swivel or weight or both between the lead decoy and the yellow thing? Same between your anchor and decoy, do you use a swivel?

I'm pretty sure that I can improve mine if I start using swivels but I have yet to experiment with them... Thanks for posting the image.

Bluemoon,

zzbutler has been with me when i last used it. It is a little hard to put in the decoy bag. I had to get one of the big mouth bags to fit the jerk setup and normal decoys. If you look at just the spreader it has little eye loops in the middle and the cord has a line clip/swivel on it. Hook the two up and you are ready to go.

Thanks for the additional info. Sounds like a good off-season project as I prepare to go non-powered just in case the fed boys outlaw some of the devices that are often in my spread...
