If it doesn't rain much between now and next weekend I will be bringing the wife and kids down to my wife's g-fathers ranch South of Hondo, to help with odds/ends and squeeze in a little hunting.

Last time three was around 12-11-09 and started to see (what I think was) the beginning of rut.

Now, after some reading I'm guessing the rut is over and the deer (Bucks) will be heading to the food sources to restore the lost energy and weight.

1. What habits/patterns are the deer in down there?

2. What techniques do I need to apply to try and bag another buck (if possible)?

There are 4 stands out there all on roadbeds.

the Hondo river runs along the edge of the property that also ahs mesquite, oak, and persimmons trees everywhere in that area.

Ohter than the feeders and spreading of corn, I'm not sure what other food sources are naturally provided.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

kp

I hunt pretty close to the area you described, havent been down in a couple of weeks, but the rut is definitely over. The mature bucks at our place are not coming to the feeders in the daytime anymore, younger deer are still there evertime it spins. The does on my place are scarce as well, mostly young bucks eating all the corn and keeping the does out. I'm headed back this weekend to try to get a few more does, hopefully they are stepping up and running those gimlets off the corn by now. Good luck!

I feel more like I do now then I did when I got here.

I was just in Hondo Sunday and Monday for some doe culling. The owners said they are just now seeing bucks come into the feeders on the cameras. We took a couple of nice does but only seen one little 6 point buck.
