How long does it usually take all you guys to get your deer back from the taxidermist? I have had some come back quick and others not so quick.Let me know .

I have 3, 1 took 10 months, 1 took 5 months, one is a year and counting. The worst one was the quickest and the cheapest. The one I am waiting on is at TruLife in granbury and I know it will be the best. The guy is expensive, but he is an artist and will tell you up front a year. We spend so much hunting them I think to spend a little more and wait a little longer to have it done by a profesional is a better option than the cheap quick job I had by a guy doing it part time in his garage. It will be on your wall forever, good or bad.

About a year. It also depends when you shoot it. Early in the season... you will get it back faster.
The wait sucks but its like Christmas morning when you finally get it!

I had a buddy that had to wait 2 years but he was happy with the finished product.

I wonder if anyone has ever taken a deer to get mounted and never got it back? That would really suck.

First one I got mounted took over a year. This one, I took it in just after Christmas, and he said late spring for when I should get it back. The guy does great work, and very reasonable at 400 for a shoulder mount.

I shot a Coues buck in Jan, 08, and it's still at the taxidermy shop in Tuscon. And my grizzly from April,08, is still in Anchorage. I need to call both taxidermists and light a fire, I guess....
I normally figure on at least a year in the shop. My theory is that a great taxidermist is really an artist, and true art doesn't keep a schedule.

12-15 months is true - it is not that it takes that long to do, but it takes that long for a good taxidermist to get to it.
Getting them there early helps but, in some cases they may still be backed up from the year before or from folks taking deer from Game Managed Ranches or even exotics. Get in line ASAP.
If you are going to do it, give it your best!

Also, it doesn't hurt to chat up your taxidermist and show genuine interest in his work. If you get to know him, you may get his best effort on your mount, and he may get to it first.

Seems like I agree with all the statements. Mine took 11 months and that was faster than what was indicated when I dropped it off. Worth the wait.

A lot of taxidermists will do them for free if you bring in an intact cape with them.

It depends on the time of year you take them. Taxidermists will be swamped now. I take mine in the summer or early fall and get them back pretty quick.
