it was cold... REALLY cold we started off by busting 2 inch thick ice to put out a small spread and a mojo... my buddy had gun issues and had to go back to the truck for a backup... we where not ready for ice this thick and ended up having to have a carpy set up deeks where about 30 yards away....
anyway my buddy is going back to the truck and a pair of teal and a gadwall LAND in the deeks and I scratch out a teal..... then... a few min later a single gaddie comes in and I get him... this goes on for about 10 min before my buddy gets back from the truck... by this time I have 4 birds on the ICE... I head out for the longest retrieve and a pair of bluebills/ring necks come in and I smoke the lead bird and then... CLICK no bullets!!! so now I have picked up 2 teal and a gray when my buddy tells me the blue bill is a CANVASBACK!! I say no way... ( I am about 50 yards away) I said it either a ringneck or a bluebill... its a diver but it aint a can...
So to all you duck snobs out there, I have been shootin these birds for 30 years what was it???... it was a goldeneye hen... and guess what.......... I didnt know it was a Goldeneye hen when it was comming into the deeks!!!
so to all the "experts" out there... there is no way you can tell me you can ID them on the wing...
anyway a great hunt and I will go and get more tomorow!!!! enjoy the pics.
