Hi, I'm near Dallas and am looking for a place within 200 or so miles to go do some "real" camping with my son, like in the woods, and maybe some simple squirrel hunting and stuff with 22's. Is there a public place like this, or maybe someone who we could pay on their land to do this (if so pm me)? It would be for a friday and saturday Thanks

You should look into public lands such as USCOE , US Forest Service , and TPWD . There are quite a few places that allow camping in or around the hunting areas. Be careful to follow the rules and regs of each entity though. Good luck and God Bless for being a great father and sharing the outdoors with your son.

LBJ up by Decatur is an ok place, a couple of lakes, a few tanks I "think" you can camp just about anywhere as long as you park on established roads. Not sure about how good the hunting is and I do know there are some restrictions on hunting (no rifles I'm pretty sure).

LBJ Grasslands is a decent place. Contact the office in Decatur for regulations and maps. I used to spend quite a bit of time out there in college chasing squirrels and camping. Shotgun / Blackpowder and archery only unless they've changed the rules.

Thanks. So would you recommend a better place then? We won't be doing much hunting, maybe squirrels and shooting some cans.

Caddo National Grasslands. You can camp at either Crockett or Coffemill lakes. There are some good bass in Crockett. I had a fisheries biologist tell me that about Crockett. That's after they had done their shocking survey and seen some of the giant bass in there. There's some of the best squirrel hunting around, there also. Only thing is, you have to have the APH(AHP?) permit, which is $45 or $48, to hunt. You can use whatever you want, as far as weapons. If you just go to camp, I don't think you have to pay for the permit?
Mmmm Hmmm

Tyler State Park isn't that far and the state has some hunting land near by, it's a really nice state park. I don't know about the hunting land, I have personally never hunted it but am going to look into it next year. The hunting land is on the river. Hope that helps.

I hunted around Coffee Mill Lake for several years. I love that place. And the Bass aint bad there either. Met a lot of good folks there over the years. Don't know if yall read the story of me getting lost and spending the night in the woods. It was on the South end of Coffee Mill near Bois D'Ark Creek. Hehe

I agree, Tyler State Park is a great place. The "hunting land near by" threw me off until the last sentence about "on the river". I then realized you were talking about the Old Sabine Bottom WMA. I have no experience there but it does have hogs and deer and who knows what else.

If you are in Dallas, don't rule out Oklahoma state parks for camping. I'm not sure you are going to find any hunting opportunities in any state parks that will coincide with camping, though.
