Just picked up a Kicks High Flyer modified choke...pretty excited about using it...its a ported choke and i haven't ever used one or been around one...i normally use Remington 3" 2 shot...i heard you can't use black cloud shells on ported chokes and i was wondering why and if they are the only ones you aren't supposed to use

You'll be fine, the BC's are the only ones causing problems with ported barrels, chokes and wad stripping chokes, the forward facing petals hang up and cause an obstruction, which has caused numerous barrel failures.

I've never heard that about BC and ported barrels. I know about the wad stripping choke problem. I can't see how it would matter at all. But with the choke I know you are fine. What's the deal with porting anyway...it doesnt help anything really does it?
As for shells get a few you like and try them out on paper.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Federal recommends NO ported chokes and NO chokes with wad strippers or grabbers.

Federal recommends NO ported chokes and NO chokes with wad strippers or grabbers.
Federal is the manufacturer of Black Cloud, fyi Stick with the regular shells. Marcstar, ports are supposed to help with recoil (kinda like a muzzle break in a rifle) and I've been told that if they are positioned right it diverts the gas in a way that is supposed to hold tighter patterns but I dont believe the second part. Ported and short barrels are loud as balls though...

Once you find a spent BC wad it becomes obvious why it is not a good idea to use them in barrels/chokes that are ported.

I like my short barrel, makes it easier to get into the tough areas while its strapped on my back and it points quick in heavy cover.

Well I guess I know the so called reasons what a ported barrel should do but I'd like to see one independent study that proves it. All Ive been able to confirm is that they are loud as hell.

I think they're for thinning out your lease? You get three guys, lease a nice little pond holding some groceries, build blinds and setup all summer, season starts, it fills up with ducks, you whip out your 24" ported barrel pump or O/U gun and pretty soon you got the little pond all to your lonesome?

You should use a choke designed for Blackclouds if that is what you shoot. It makes a difference!
