I have seen lots of ducks on my pond for the past couple of days. Can I just go sit out there before sunrise and wait for the sun to come up and start shooting when they come in? All I have is #8 shot. Would I need something heavier? You can't shoot them when they re sitting on the water, right?

make sure you have steel shot, #4 or #2 is best...you can shoot them on the water...make sure you know what kind of ducks they are and how many you can shoot. might be best to find someone in your area that knows ducks and can help you out the first few times.

I don't think Driller meant any harm. I know why he is laughing. Inside joke from another part of the forum. I seriously thought it was illegal to shoot ducks on the water. Don't know why I thought that, but I heard it somewhere. I never really considered duck hunting and to be honest, thought most of you guys were nuts!! LOL But, seeing as many ducks around here that I have I am actually comsidering giving it a shot. Guess I better read up on the regs first.

Some think that it is not "sporting" to shoot ducks on the water but it is legal...me i get em' where i can lol
Make sure you are shooting steel shot... i use #3's (also just an fyi, your not allowed to have any lead shot with you while hunting waterfowl, its a big no no)
I would suggest reading the regs as u stated above about bag limits... it can be very difficult to ID certain birds in flight...im still learning lol i just bought the book "the lemaster method" and its alot of help
Legal shooting time (LST) is 30mins before sunrise... i use the weather channel website to find sunrise for my area
There are alot of guys an here who are not afraid to call ya out if you were to make a slip up so know what you have before you post pics or anything (might save ya a ticket)! Along with your critics, there are alot of great people on this sight with alot of knowledge who would be more than willing to help out!
Hope this helps, and thank you for your service

All it took was one hunt when I was 14 with a couple of friends and I put up the deer rifle for all but a couple hunts a year. We only killed a few birds and two were hen shovelers(We thought they were baby mallards.. lol), but still we've been addicted ever since.
The regulations can seem overwhelming at first but with a little time you will have it down, look around on DU's website for pics of the different kinds of ducks(or at least the ones with specific regulations)to help you identify them.
Keep it simple at first, if your hunting small ponds you prolly wont need many decoys, if any at all, just get remember ducks have very good eyes so wear full camo and get hidden.
Im from the corsicana area and most everything we hunt are off the small ponds, there usually easy hunts, perfect for a newbie.
Just get out there and give it a shot, when it gets in your blood it wont be long before you'll have all those laws memorized.

Vet, let me be the first to say that if you got ducks at 8 am on a pond go get your licenses and stamps and I'll be out there next Sat morning with everything else you need hey, can't blame a guy for trying, right! Pretty easy to make friends on the forum when you got birds

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm thinking I'm gonna get out there one morning and hide and see if they still come in.
This is the last thing my wife is gonna wanna here. "Hey honey, you know all that camo, gear, decoys, gun, ammo and everything else I have for deer hunting? Well, it won't work for ducks so I gotta get new stuff!" To me that's half the fun.

Check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. It will have all the information that you will need. Along with non-lead shot you need to make sure that you have not only a hunting license but also the appropriate duck stamp. If you get caught without those you are in trouble. Game wardens won't buy a "self-defense" shooting scenario with ducks (even if you put a throw down knife on them). Shooting birds that are sitting still, while considered 'unsporting' is not illegal. Good luck!

Key word is that "some consider" it unsporting. I've always thought that was the goal!

True, I should have said "considered un-sporting by some people." I have no problem Arkansa'in a bird if I'm going to eat it. When I feel like being extra "sporting" I use my double barrel so I only have two shots instead of 3 with my pump.
No offense meant to anyone (unless of course you're from Arkansas but I'm not the one that coined the term so don't blame me).
Good luck on your hunt texretvet and GOD bless you for your service to our country.

You don't need new camo, except maybe waders. Deer camo works better for ducks in Texas most places.

Depending on the pond you don't even need waders. I think I hunted my first season without a pair of waders.
And if you can shoot them on the water, even better. I like to get the birds on the water. That's the goal, to fool the ducks, that's part of the fun.
