At least one day on my weeklong duck/goose hunt.

I read the article on pump shotguns in the new DU mag and thought it would be cool to shoot my dad's first shotgun. I started with a 870 pump like a lot of us did, and I think it's gonna be fun to shoot this old Model 12. Dad's doesn't have a kickpad though. Also, I'm gonna have to grab some 2 3/4" shells.

Does anyone know if steel shot is cool with an old Model 12?

I let a friend shoot it several years ago with steel, no problems, but he only shot a handful of times.

This is gonna be cool.

Buy you some Bismuth, it would be a shame to damage it just to save a few dollars.

I don't believe the steel in the barrels today is any better than in guns of that era, what I do believe after looking at tons of older barrels at gun shows and on store shelves, is the choke ramp technology changed for steel, less/longer ramp, longer parallel sections and such, and that is what causes the problems

Pretty cool Moose. I am still waiting on my old 870. It's been in the shop for some time now. One area gun dealer sure doesn't seem to be in a hurry to help me out.

I would agree with getting some ammo other than steel

Got one here at the house. Belonged to my Grandfather. It's in such nice shape I don't want to take it out to the blind !

Nice gun you have there.

Thanks guys. I think the bismuth is a great idea.

Dad has the 12 guage and the .22 LR.

He and my Paw Paw had the whole set. 12, 16, 20, .410, and 22.

Paw Paw traded the .410 to some crook of a gun dealer who knew what is was really worth. He traded it for a .270 Remington with a Redfield scope. Apparently the 410 is now worth some serious cash.

The 16 and 20 were stolen from his house by illegal border jumpers. They also got his Browning Sweet 16 that I would really really love to have. My dad is from the valley.

My grandpa has one that will be mine one day. That gun has killed a ton of tree rats wink

It is much rougher than the one in the picture though. He used it and a lot of the blueing has worn off.

Good luck and have fun MK.

The one in the picture is just a google image.

Dad's is much rougher, too.

Do NOT shoot steel through a Model 12. Even if it has an IC choke, it is UNSAFE ti fire with modern steel ammo. Even the Model 12 "Heavy Duck" 3" magnum model is NOT safe for steel.

In fact I own one and it's for sale in the classifieds right now. $850. 3" chamber, nickle steel, 30" FC solid rib barrel. Original red rubber recoil pad. 95% or better. 1954 produced gun.

Moose, that's cool! Might have to order that Bismuth shot but it seems worth it.

I have an old model 11 and I've heard the steel shot will wear down the old barrels after extended use. They changed the type of steel they use when they made lead illegal over water. Definitely go with the bismuth and let me know where I can get some.

Mk ... I own a 1917 Model 12 "Black Diamond Trap" 12 ga also. It was my father's gun. He was an ardent trap shooter and first class pheasant hunter for 40 years before the gun passed on to me in 1973. I shot a LOT of upland birds and waterfowl with that gun when lead was still legal to use. In recent years I pull the gun out around Christmas time for a "Nostalgia" hunt in memory of my Dad. Of course I use Bismuth. Look very carefully at the rounds sitting next to the gun in these pics ...

Very, very, cool Jim.

My dad seemed pretty happy when I told him that I wanted to shoot his old gun.

When we were at Cabela's, he was feverishly looking for a case of Kent #4 when I found the Bismuth.

I showed it to him and that it costs $30 for 10 shells. He nearly shat his pants. He goes, "Don't worry about that gun, I've shot a million shells through it. Get some steel for it, who cares."

I told him that I wanted that gun later on and intended on keeping it in the best shape that I can.

Jim, your father's gun is really cool. By the way, that greenhead is banded! How cool is that? A banded greenhead with pappy's old pump! Very cool.

Happy New Year!
