My wife's parents are down here right now from Iowa and we were talking about hunting. My FIL told me he could get me on a couple of farms in either Iowa or Illinois to hunt, if I didn't mind paying the license fees. Even the out of state license and tags is less than a third of what I pay here at home. Plus I know my wife would support it, as she would get to go home and stay with her parents. I would just have to coordinate it with whichever method is the season over Thanksgiving. My goodness do they have some MONSTERS up there!

I just couldn't completely give up Texas hunting...there's nothing like it in my book...

Sounds like a good plan. If I had to visit my in-laws for an extended period of time, I would rather be hunting too:-)
There are some big bodied, heavy racked deers there.

Sounds like you have a plan. However, I believe Iowa and Illinois are "draw" states. Might be able to get leftover tags OTC though. confused2

They are draw depending on the area. The area I would hunt in Iowa had more than 1700 tags that went unclaimed this year. I'll definitely be going through the rules to see what the real deal is. I love TX, and hunting in TX; but paying through the nose to do it is getting old. Ideally I'll buy my own land someday and it won't be an issue.

The firearm issue isn't a big deal cause I only hunt with a bow here. I'd probably just take my muzzleloader up there. Big difference would be hunting over cornfields as opposed to a feeder.

Sounds like it could be fun... Don't know that I could ever give up Texas hunting, but I also dont have to pay for a lease with having 2 family ranches...

It would be cool to get to do both though up

Get a shotgun or muzzleloader and get after it. Some great deer in both states.

I don't know if I would ever give up TX hunting, probably just deer hunting. I'd use the money I spend on a lease to go do something different like Antelope or Alligator.

I hunt up in NW Iowa every year. It is definitly a different challenge. Well worth the trip and expense of a non-res tag ($525.00)if you get drawn. The only season open around thanksgiving is early bow season.

The past few years we have gone in the second shotgun season because it gives you a few more days than the first season. First shotgun season only runs from Saturday through Wednesday. Second goes a full 9 days, but is usually colder and snowier. If you get the chance, I highly recommend going. It's and awesome hunt and the best tasting venison you will ever eat.

Now that's funny. You don't have a clue how much it costs to own property, manage, and maintain it do you? Done in a proper manner you will come out ahead leasing and paying through the nose.

Not everybody that owns land in TX has it in the brush country with high fence and protein feeders. I think it is just the young mans dream to own a little chunk of land that is his. Ever thought yours might not be the only way to do things? Didnt think so.

For what people pay for hunting in Texas and the convienince of local, it's real ease to spend that money on lots bigger deer or even elk if you are willing to get up off your rear end and travel.

It's EXPENSIVE.

on edit... It doesn't HAVE to be, but if you are in an area with cedars and mesquite, just maintaining the clearings you already have and keeping your oak trees from being choked out takes TIME and money, or less time and more MONEY.

Truth be told, if you get an Ag exemption and have reasonably priced insurance (like being a member of Farm Bureau), those 2 costs will be pretty close to what a good lease would cost. Hunting costs (stands, feeders, corn, etc) will be a wash, all you have left to cover is the mortgage, land improvement / maintenance, and utilities. Would be reasonable to expect several thousand a year for a small tract, MUCH more for a larger tract.

Oh no lie. I am very fortunate in that I can hunt my own or go and hunt family land. I have never had to lease. There was a time I was on a lease with some old football buddies, but it was to visit not necessity. I would gladly do without TX and spend my time and money going to KS. I really enjoy hunting in SW KS. Amazing country.

I hear what you're saying. I'm new to Texas, but coming from the land of public ground, I can't stomach the thought of paying $800, $1000, or more for a deer lease. Fortunately, my inlaws own a few sizable tracts in NE Kansas that they allow me to deer hunt. Even better is that Kansas offers a special hunt-own-land permit for family of resident landowners. I can get a license, either-sex tag, and a doe tag for about $175.

What I'm getting at is taking your FIL up on his offer. It's a cool way to hunt up there. Good luck whatever way you go cheers

Actually I do, my family owns a bit of land, but there isn't much of a deer population. I want to own land because it is mine and I can do what I want with it. I'm not knocking the landowners in Texas, the price is what the market will bear. But for me, it's still an expensive hobby.

I'd take it buddy! Them kinda offers don't pop up every day.

I got invited last year to go mountain lion hunting this year in western CO. But being laid off for 10 months I didn't have the extra $$. Plannin on goin next year though.

That sucks man. I hope you get out there next year. I am also unemployed, which has curtailed my deer hunting a bit. Lease was already paid for but gas gets expensive quick.

Go for it. The big differences are short season, usually no rifles and it's cold!!! The plus is the deer can be BIG, 250++.
