i just started dove hunting this year. in september, we saw lots of birds. but i've been out twice (in tarrant county) area since the 2nd dove season started and we've seen maybe a small handful of birds but way out of shooting range..... where did they go? fly south for the winter? getting lazy hanging out in the trees in the cold??

Over the past few weeks here in Central Texas I'd been noticing a few dozen birds every day on my commute and from my office window, which is adjacent to some grain fields and tanks. Today I only saw one. I was planning on hunting some this week but now I'm not sure I'll even try.

I went on Sunday and saw all kinds of dove on the way there, on powerlines and near ponds. But when I got to where I hunt, they were all out of shooting range.

Went Monday morning, but earlier and stayed later, not a single bird. Saw one while driving back.

Dove as a rule, are early migrators. That's why the season opens in Sept, and why there are so many around then. All but the hardiest of them are gone. I did get one on Saturday, had about 30 in a tree, and I did the sneak on em.

My dog snores.

I have not had time to upload the pictures yet, but north of Uvalde hunting with saltstorm, there were hundreds of them flying into the field we were on. I stayed for monday and having figured out where on the field I needed to be on the field while hunting Sunday and knew I could limit out and be on the road in time to make it home for a party at the house yesterday evening. I was limited before 8:30 and that was with a malfunctioning firing pin in the first barrel of my SXS 20GA. That is how good it was.

I think the trick with the late season is to find either some sort of agricultural field that still has something the dove want as any dove in the area will be concentrated on it as they were on Saltstorm's field. We were hunting uncut seasame and milo and I easily limited Sunday and Monday.

If one is hunting publc land, consider the sunflowers and croton is pretty much gone by now. Instead I think I would concentrate on finding the main roosts in an area that still have uncut fields nearby. My deer least in Graham had lots of dove a week ago, but even in the early season it is a major roost for the area. They start coming in the afternoon and load up in the mesquites. Their sanctuary is about to be rocked, by me.
