On Saturday I was able to go out to a private lake in Sherman that we get to hunt a few times a year. The place was covered up in ducks but we had a pretty rough day. My brother had the roughest duck hunt I have ever seen. At LST I folded a mallard and my other buddy dropped a redhead hen. We shot 6 shells total. AFTER these shells had been fired my brother looks over and not 30 yds from where he is sitting are 15 Canada Geese!!!!
Why didn't they leave when we came in breaking ice that morning? Better yet why didn't they book it after we fired six shots? I will never get it
Anyway, my brother whispers to me if he should shoot them. "Hell yes, water swat them right now" I said. As he raises his gun they take off and he drops one into the icey water. The ice was too thick to send the dog after this goose ( who was still very much alive) and my brother tries to track it down. We never found it
, even after looking for an hour later on. So we lost his first ever goose and a golden opportunity to smoke them while they were just sitting on the bank. He told me later he was afraid they were the landowners pets
He was positioned on the far left of our spread and the ducks wanted to be right in front of him. Miss after miss after miss. Mallards and gadwalls are counting their lucky stars. I have never seen such a poor display of shotgunning.
While he is up looking for his goose, a flock of 10 ringers decoy and land in the spread. My buddy and I jump them and each get a triple.
We stayed until 12:30 since my brother was intent on getting to kill at least one duck. Ringers and mallards were still flying when we threw in the towel. My buddy and I each ended up with 5 birds. Brother ended up with a giant goose egg.
3 more shells, no birds to show for it:
We shoulda easily had a 3 man limit by 10 AM, just one of those days I guess.
6 ringers, a redhead hen, greenhead, GWT and a gaddie
