In a Bowtech Admiral specifically. Or should I find a 70 lb model.

Thanks,

I would get the 70# and back it off until you feel comfortable.

Shoot what you feel comfortable, and keep in mind a bow performs best when it is maxed out. 60lbs is plenty for an elk, would focus more on your terminal tackle (arrow weight & broadhead). I wouldn't go lighter than 400grs for elk, focus on KE rather than poundage of your bow. 1lb of draw weight only equates to about 2-3 feet per second. Given that, and making some broad assumptions - shooting a 400gr arrow at 70lbs getting 290fps (ballpark for a 28" admiral) you're KE is 75Ftlbs, drop down 10lbs in draw weight and you're looking at 60-65ftlbs - not much of a difference considering the minimum required is 42, and 65ftlbs gets you into the minimum for the next category (Dangerous game). Much much much better to be shooting something you are extremely comfortable with, can be stuck at full draw for extended periods, and you'll be excited. Accuracy is key, all you may be getting with extra speed is a faster wound.

Sidenote: If you shoot an elk for the record book...Pope and Young has rules for draw weights over 65lbs for entry into the books.

That rule is for let-off %, not draw weight. Many bows now come with up to 80% let-off, which makes it easier to hold at full draw. P&Y rule just states that there will be an asterik (*) next to your entry if the let-off is greater than 65%

Not to big an issue for me. I would let them put half a dozen asteriks if I could get a P&Y on my first archery elk trip smile The local bow shop has a 60 lb model, but no 70.
