Shot a doe out at the place Saturday afternoon. Drive down on the Prowler to load her up. Well what do ya know, button buck. I was pissed as you could imagine. They were through the skin, but worn down, like he'd been rubbin' on a tree or something. I have seen nubs that didn't break the skin taller than these. When he was looking straight at me I couldn't tell, and he never put his head down where I could see the top of it. I couldn't believe it. My point is, if we weren't in an AR county, that would be my buck tag for the year. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about taking the nubber, but it didn't penalize me like it would have in the past.

Well, I'm confused. Are you in an AR county or not?

To me, a button buck is a .5 YO buck that counts as an antlerless deer. It's not a spike with very small antlers.

If they are broken through and you call it an antlerless deer, you better hope you don't get checked...

Yes, AR County (Jack). If they are breaking the skin, this is a buck, correct? If they aren't breaking the skin, it's antlerless, correct?

This is straight out of the 2009-2010 Texas Annual

DEER (READ BELOW AND PGS. 61–63 VERY CAREFULLY)

A “buck deer” is a deer with a hardened antler protruding through the skin. A “spike buck deer” is a BUCK with no antler having more than one point. ALL OTHER DEER ARE ANTLERLESS DEER. A spike buck must be tagged with a buck deer tag from the hunter’s hunting license or applicable permit.

Pretty clear huh?

So, it was a small spike buck, not a button buck (which by definition doesn't have a hardened antler protruding thru the skin).

Or is my definition of a button buck incorrect?

By my definition it just means a young buck deer with antlers not protruding enough to see from a distance.
If it has nuts and no hardened antler protuding through the skin it gets tagged as a doe (but is also a button buck).
If they are protruding< even if it just looks like 2 black "buttons" on his head he gets tagged as a buck and is considered a spike under the rules.
The spikes they WANT you to shoot have antlers 6 in or more.

I'm betting there's a greater than zero chance that this happens.

I couldn't be anymore legal if I was a game warden myself. Why don't you stick to making pizzas and cedar hackin.
