We goose hunt alot up near Dumas for canada's and snows. My uncle was telling me he wanted to fly from amarillo to houston to go with an outfitter down there for geese.
The more I think about this it doesn't seem like a good idea?
Is the hunting on the KP any better than up in the panhandle? Is it worth it for just geese?
Just curious about this.
thanks,

The Katy Prairie isn't really the Katy Prairie anymore. Its more like the Katy Suburban Jungle. Houses now sit where most of the rice fields used to be. If you and your uncle want to hunt this area you're better served going a little further southwest to Garwood, El Campo and Eagle Lake.

I live just north of Houston and frequent the Katy area. I've duck and goose hunted on several occasions in Tulia (about an hr south of Amarillo) and I can tell you this much: I'd take the panhandle every day over the Katy Prairie. Save the $ and the plane ride. You've got world-class bird hunting right where you are.

i agree with etxbuckman...only exception might be a conservation snow hunt if your numbers aren't there, or if you don't have specks in your area.

It's still pretty good for ducks, but the goose action is not what is used to be. If you want to come over to Houston and do some quality goose hunting...head down to Eagle Lake or Garwood, which is about 1 to 1.5 hours from Katy.

I'm definatly dissapointed with the sprawl that has crept out into the Katy Prarie. El Campo would be my vote.

What guide/ outfitter is he interested in? Might be a good one or one that blows smoke. Been on a few leases here in Katy, but they sent us to East Bernard, Eagle Lake and Bellville areas.
Unfortunately, I live here also and am disturbed on the areas that are being sold for housing. Urban sprawl is killin' out waterfowl season. Litterally!

Went on a guided goose hunt outside of Lubbock nearly two weeks ago. We had nine men and could have limited easily but the geese just werent decoying worth a crap that day. The field behind us probably had bout 10,000 geese in it by mid morning. The goose population in the panhandle is alive and well this season.

TP,
I don't have an particular guide in mind. Just thinking right now. It might be to late in the season to warrant a trip down there.
