ok we have a 12 week old pup who is doing well with her training and has integrated into the family perfectly, I have been asked if I would like to give a home to a 3 year old female that is trained on comands and fetch but has not hunted alot. (I am talking about labs) we have all the love in the world and I am old enough to know what I am getting into.

My question is would it be an advantage or disadvantage to try and train them together...

I hate to see her end up in a home that dosent love her and dosent get her in the field???

so what do yall think?

If you are prepared to take care of the new dog and realize the extra time and money it's going to take, I say do it. Your pup will have to make a few adjustments with the new dog but they will work it out amongst themselves. They will eventually become buds. My two female labs are like two peas in a pod. One is 5 a one is 3, about the same age difference as you would have. I really don't see any advantage or disadvantage in training. Has the dog been in water and around gun fire?

yea that could work out real well given the size/age difference. Let them work it out on their own and you possible pay a big vet bill.

I'd say it would work out just fine. But.... I would not want my puppy bonding more with the new dog then myself. I would limit their time together. You'll have a better working relationship with your new puppy if you play it that way.

I agree totally here. Some bonding is ok, but I would limit it for a while. Best of luck...oh and I wouldn't worry about a vet bill...it rarely comes to that.

X2 on both accounts. You need to be the pups biggest outlet for leadership, companionship & sustinence in order to have a strong working bond & foster pup's desire to perform for YOU. Also beware of any vices you may not be aware of in the new dog that pup could pick up and set back her progress. As far as pup getting hurt, I've had countless changes and introductions in our Lab kennels and never has it come to a dog being harmed. Usually the establishing of pack order looks and sounds much more severe than it actually is. Much of the 'posturing' happens quite subtly.
