i am interested in purchasing a new rifle. I want one that is relatively short so its easy to carry around in the truck when i drive around the ranch. It will be used for taking out varmints, hogs, and some cull deer. i was thinking about something in the .223-.25 caliber range. i just figured i would get some of yalls opinions before i asked for one for Christmas or before i go out and buy one.
Thanks,
John Rogers

I have NEF in 308 and it is short, easy to handle, has plenty of knockdown power and real accurate.

most folks would probably want something semi-auto, but after owning a ar-15 i would stick with my remington 700 sps in .22-250
stainless steel barrel and action means no rust, sythetic stock dosen't scratch or get messed up.
It rides around with me for hundreds of miles and is perfect, I've taken does, aoudad, hogs, javalina, coyotes, axis deer, turkey and blackbuck with it, all outta the truck.
trust me, you'll want somehting with a scope on it when you see a coyote about 200 yards out.
I paid 500 for the rifle brand new

There was one for sale on here this week, but I missed it by about 10 minutes. Remington 660 in 6MM with a 3x9 Leupold. Story of my life - day late and a dollar short.
My current truck gun is a Savage 340E in 223 that I saved from a pawn shop back in the 80's. It works, but it's really a little too long and little too heavy to make a perfect truck gun.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

see thats the problem i already own a 6mm but it was built by my grandfather and is too nice to bump around in a truck all day and the barrel is too long to easily get out of the window. My buddy has a browing A-bolt 223 wssm that is pretty sweet. i was thinking of either that caliber or the 25 wssm... what do yall think about that?

I'd buy me a Remington Model Seven. You can get it in Short Action Calibers all the way up to .308. And I have killed MANY a coyote with my .308. And good on hogs when they are "out there" a little ways.

My favorite is a Remington Model 600 in 6mm. Got a little 6X fixed Weaver K-6 scope on it. Quick to get out the window. A good second would be a lever action carbine in 30-30 or such.

Model 94 30-30. Light, short, holds 6 rounds. What more do you need? It's the perfect truck gun for me.

Ruger M77 Compact. I have one in .223 and total length is 35". Not a child's model so don't be confused. Mine has killed many a yote, bobcat, fox, hog etc. Also, the Ruger has a claw extractor and the 3 position saftey like the old Winchester Model 70s.

John Rogers I would definitely go with a Remington Model 7 Predator or a CZ 527. Either would be perfect for the truck IMO due to their small size.

i have a remington model 7 in 260 SS with synthetic. perfect gun, short, compact, but stout enough cartridge to bring down anything in texas.
As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind...Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks--Thomas Jefferson

mini 14 thumbs down. I only hunt with my .270. It seems like it was designed to be a saddle rifle its short but Its as acurate as I can shoot Its brought down 60 pound goats at 500yds(it took me 3 tries) but when im in a stand or in and out of a vechicle I dont bump anything. Hell I dont even know the make on it but I could never go to a full size barrel

im making a "truck gun from an encore"... donno what cal yet but thinking that an encore in stainless/composit in a mid cal like 243, 260.7mm-08, or 308... might get a wild hair and find me a short 45-70 who knows? I would like one of the compact rugers too! but I dont usually get more than 1 shot any way...
learn something new everyday and you will have never wasted a day.
