Carol and I took both dawgs about 9:00 this morning for an hour hunt. Cappy was with Carol and Remi with me about 75 yards away in another blind. We hadn't been there 5 minutes and I heard Carol shoot twice. I looked up and saw a duck on the far side of the open water faltering and losing altitude. I fired twice and the bird dropped. Unfortunately, it dropped maybe 10 yards past the open water into the shallow flooded grassy area. I lined Remi up from shore and sent her on what was a "blind retrieve" for her since she didn't see the duck go down being down in the pit blind at the time.

When she got to the far side and went into the gneral area where the bird fell, it became quickly obvious that Remi was having trouble in water she generally charges through full speed. Oh No! Ice! I couldn't see it from our blind as all the water appeared to be open even though the temps dropped to just under 30 here last night. To make matters worse, Remi ignored my whistle commands once she got scent of the downed bird and I couldn't call her off of the retrieve.

To make matters even worse, this morning was the only time this season that we left the house without the e-collars on both dawgs. If either dawg intentionally disregards a verbal command, a light knick from that collar gets instant compliance. No e-collar and Remi decided to totally ignore me until she had the bird. Then instead of swimming directly back to me through the open water, miss nutless decided to run through the shallows all the way around, a thin ice-breaking trip of 250 yards rather than a 50 yard open water swim.

She was bleeding from multiple cuts when she got back. I toweled her off and saw that none were bleeding significantly. We picked up and headed home immediately to wash her down with warm water and treat the cuts with Bacetracin. She's swollen and sore but responding to both Benadryl and 81 mg aspirin. None of the cuts are serious enough to require medical attention but she has 15-20 of them. Here she is up on the operating table in our surgical suite.

She been placed on the injured reserve list for this weekends games.

Sorry to hear that Cappy. That ice can be some dangerous stuff. Glad it wasn't worse for ya.

I had my dog in the ice this morning, too. No serious damage, but she sure wasn't moving through it quickly.

They just don't know when to stop! I haven't had any trouble with Sable, she takes it slower through the ice. I guess most of the time it's either thicker or thinner than it was for yall, sounds like it was the perfect thickness to get her. Hope they heal up quick!

To some they are a tool like a hammer in a tool box to others they are like kids. Whatever floats your boat.

I'm with you Cappy and I hope Remi gets better soon.

What amazing drive! She deserves a weekend off.

Nope, I put her there. And she's not an "it", she's a she. Same as my daughter. And if you can't relate to that well then there's no reason for me to try to explain further, folks like you would just never understand.

I prefer to clean mine outside but I think I would rather have a few feathers around than dog [censored] on my splace mat

I cleaned a six point off the balcony of our brand new fraternity house last year. ON CAMPUS. I had quite the audience.

Ouch.
Cappy, that dog may be sore now, but I bet it was still excited to be out hunting and could care less at the time.

BTW, I have skinned and butchered an Alligator in my driveway. But, my neighbors know me for who I am. No one bat an eye or said a word.
