Bread my 2 lab's and she just gave birth to 11 pup's. Should I split them up to make sure all of them eat. I would only do this for about 15 minutes each group and then put them all in the box. Just looking for any pointers that can help my chances to have all of them survive. She is a first time mom and doing great. Any advice will help. Thank you.

I would let them all try to fend for themselves at first. Watch them very closely to see if you see the same pup(s) not always getting to eat. Then you will probably have to do it by hand.... Google is your friend. There's a lot of good info out there about puppy/litter care. 11 pups is going to be one heck of a handful. Good luck!

You should be fine with 11 as a single group. Just watch and make sure the smaller pups are always eating. Some people use a milk replacer to help supplement the pups but I do not agree with that practice unless you have to.

damn that's tough. 11 pups is a lot to start with. I was at work when the last dog I had was having the pups. My mom had fallen asleep and woke up to whining puppies around 2 a.m. 2 alive and well and my mom found one laying in the hallway. We think it was still born and Coco knew it so she had it in the hallway out of the box. She had 9 including that one.

I think it just wasn't ready to come out yet. It would latch on but would not suck we so fed it with a syringe because it would not suck on a bottle either. Think he was just too weak.I put 3"pvc tube elevated about 6 inches high all the way around the whelping box to help prevent the mom from smothering them.

Yes, it would be smart to split them into shifts. Try to put the bigger ones in one group (so they don't knock off the smaller ones). I usually change shifts every 2 or 3 hours so mom has time to clean them, too. I also like to supplement all of them at least twice a day with canned goat milk diluted with 1/2 water (use a slow flow nipple). Let me know how it goes.
GOOD LUCK

Is this mama's first litter? We have a female that averages 11-13 pups. (They are always big, strong and healthy.) An experienced, nurturing mama dog will actually separate the pups herself - set half the litter aside and feed some, then feed the other half. In a few days, the pups are trained by mama to wait for their feeding - they just go to sleep. Any signs of the mama doing this?
As much as you can, try NOT to intervene. If you 'help' with supplemental feedings, mama will produce less milk. Also, she may not figure it out for herself. However, you CAN help her get the idea of separating her litter.
We've had great mama dogs and 'nightmare' mama dogs. Litter size and tendency toward nurturing are inherited traits... we never breed 'nightmare' mama's a second time!

It's sad, but best to let nature take it's course. These weaker pups usually end up with health issues later. Enjoy the 10 healthy ones and know number 11 won't suffer!
