I have decided I want a dog but real undecided on what I want. I like the labs but with two smaller cockers at home, that are mommas babies, just not sure I want a moose. Not to mention I have heard all the horror stories getting thru the puppy stage and a cocker is pretty bad but pale in comparison.
Anyway, I like stinkbelly's Izzy (DD) and a Boykin because of the versatility of the dogs. They can be upland or waterfowl...obviously one is a pointer and the other is a flushing dog but you get the point.
I know most waterfowl boards are very lab/chessie slanted, this one is lab. But before I make a 15 year commitment I want to make sure it is the right decision. I just want to hear the comparison between a Boykin and a lab plus hear your story about them.
(I'll post this in the dog section too but know not everyone up here looks down there)

I have a cocker at home that is my fiancees dog and I have a chocolate lab and they are the best friends in the world. Maggie (lab) can not go anywhere without Gauge (cocker) attached to her hip. They are great friends and have been really good for each other. We had Maggie for about a year before we got Gauge and he is way worse as far as getting into trouble than Maggie ever was. Granted Maggie is the calmest lab I have ever been around but he is a little turd most of the time.
I hunt Maggie for doves and ducks and have even taken her quail hunting and she has done very well at all of them. I am a lab person so I am bias but I did have a cocker spaniel growing up so I was ok with getting another one when my old lady wanted one. I think the lab will do great with your two other dogs. Labs are very social and love being around other dogs.

There was a episode of get in the game and the were using them for dove hunting. They seem to fit that task well. dont know about cold weather waterfowl hunting.
I think they are nice looking dogs with alot going for them.

I have a ball of fire English Cocker Spaniel. She is really good at upland. I use her for flushing and retrieving, she has retrieve ducks but only one or two at a session. She loves water but it will get the best of her over a long time, just not big enough. I do have 8 English pointers also and out side of the two older pointer, she rules the roost. I do not believe a Boykin would be much different in the way they get along. Whats nice about the smaller dogs is that they can curl up in the recliner and watch TV with you. A Lab or Pointer does not leave enough room for that.

I have been thinking about getting a boykin alos. So far I have found that they are out of my price range, and I really like labs too.

There is a guy near Hutto that breeds Boykins. He had a litter at my vet's office one morning. Cute little dogs. Wouldn't want to have to pull cockleburs or stickers out of that fur though.

I've heard that they make great little duck dogs. You could always find a lab small lab. My last one was only 55 lbs. The one I have now is 65.

Im thinking I want to find a small lab like that, I think a lab would be tougher than a boykin.

The good thing about a labs is how well they handle the cold, and their coat. Dogs with long hair get burs, and they get that "wet mutt" smell when they get wet. Just get a lab and be done with it!! A yeller one at that!

My lab weighs 62 lbs. Hardly has a problem with other dogs unless they're dachshunds! She likes to pick them up by their heads!

My lab charlie weighs only 55 lbs. She is great in the boat or kayak. Her trainer breeds boykins and he swears by them.
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes

Another vote for lab. I had a lab and cocker when I was a kid that got along fabulously. I've never had any problems with puuphood. Make it black though.

Guy - it is the two years of chewing every possible thing they can get in their mouths. I had a buddy whose dog ate all the wiring out of the air conditioning unit outside and another had a lab and it ate every garden/soaker hose it could get a hold of. Just a big dog with a lot of energy. The cockers haven't been too bad but they have the energy without the size to flat destroy something. Not saying those guys did it the way I would've because I would've done more kennel when I would be gone and less time alone in the backyard and such. Charlie - our male cockers name is Charlie Could you PM me the contact info to your breeder cuz I would love to talk to him. Not saying I won't end up with a lab I just want to make sure it is exactly what I want...like I said it is a long commitment to an animal. Keep'em coming if you can guys...

"I think a lab would be tougher than a boykin."
You'd be wrong. Boykins don't know quit. A small lab or a big boykin, i'm going with a boykin every time.
I posted up in the dog forum, but I'll add a little bit here.
I'm from SC(where these dogs originated) and they were originally bred for duck hunting and turkey hunting in SC swamps. They make excellent duck dogs, but if it gets cold, you definitely need to slap a vest on them. They are the birdiest dogs I have ever seen right off of the bat. Typical spaniel in some regards; loves to please, naturally quarters, needs lots of exercise. Obviously, they aren't big water dogs or for folks that shoot a lot of geese(props to the retriever breeds here). They can handle a goose or two with no problem though(well, the small ones might have to drag a big one back, but they'll bring it back).
They do have a history of hip problems, so you need to make sure that at the very least, the parents have their certs, and preferably a few generations back.
I have had 2 of them myself, and would be getting a 3rd this spring/summer if I wasn't getting an American Water Spaniel(a parent dog of the Boykin).

You got to kennel your dog bro and you do not have those problems! If my lab is not right by my side, she is in her kennel. My lab is 4 yrs old now, I do not worry, she goes in her kennel on her own when I’m not home and makes no trouble at all., but in her early years, I put her in her kennel when I was gone, dogs need that, talk to your vet, they will tell you the same.

I thought he was bigger than 50 lbs but at the same time I wasn't sure enough to say something It doesn't matter ole Mav is good as gold and worth his weight in it. Guy - our cockers were crate trained and maybe that is why I am thinking they are easier than labs? I said I would do it differently and that is exactly the piece I was talking about. I am 100% on board with the crate deal.

My dog has never been crated and never chewed anything she wasn't supposed to chew. Teach them early!
