Holy crap is that north wind hurting. Still thawing my hands out from the walk in on the parking lot. If I was a greenehad in northerth nebraska, I think this would be my free ride south. I bet there will be thin ice on alot of ponds tomorrow. Getting even colder tonight, and less wind to keep the water stirred up.

sounds like your brother has a good recycling program He really was trying to rain on my parade, but I don't have a problem with it. Those ducks aren't eating the chit in the water like he's thinking, they're grubbing on all the good stuff that is growing in that fertilized water. At least that is what I'm telling myself... I did watch a show on the Outdoor Channel a couple of years ago where some guys were hunting up north in REALLY cold weather at a dairy farm. Why? Because the fresh, warm cow poop was the only food source that wasn't frozen up. They were hunkered down by a telephone pole with no other cover, I kid you not, and (literally) hammered the poop out of mallards that were pouring in. To me it's the same as catfish. Some of the best eatin' fish there is and they eat all kinds of nasty stuff. Some of my best catfishin' trips have been sneaking up under a water turkey roost and catching blues that are feeding on the... errr.... droppings.

We hunt a spot late season that the rancher feeds the cattle a mix of hay, corn, and malasis and the ducks are in there by the thousands standing on the ground eating the corn out of the cows poop!

I drive by this ranch every now and then, there are so many cows in this fenced in area, there is zero vegetation. I mean there are so many cows crowed in this area, it smells when you drive by, that’s how bad it is. In this fenced in area, there is a small tank, again no vegetation, just dirt and poop, and this little tank is just loaded with ducks, I suspect all from the poop. I have also heard hunting over something like this can be considered baiting, especially poop corn.

Well what you do is find a lake or pond close by and we leave from eating the poop and want to loaf then you are there to ambush them! Not illegal to hunt...

I'm not saying that's worng, but be careful, the law is written that you don't have to actually be over the bait, if the birds patterns are at all "influenced" by the bait (they get to say what is and what isn't), and you are capitalizing on that, you're out of luck. I think that poop corn would be a stretch. But if there was any corn at all on the ground ANY corn, I wouldn't hunt it. Ain't worth it.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread, but what if the cow pie didn't have any recognizable feed in it? I'd guess that is how those guys up north were able to produce that footage???
Does anyone know for sure even if there is digested corn on the ground would that constitute baiting? It isn't like the anyone is spreading the corn out with the purpose of hunting it. I don't see the legal difference between hunting over cow turds and hunting over cut crops or even a pond with jap millet.
Seems like a stretch to me, but ya never know...

I do not think it is a problem. However, I will be calling Game Warden and confirming.

Ok... Just got off the phone with the Game Warden. It is not illegal to hunt a area where the rancher is feeding a mix of hay, corn and molasis and the ducks are eating the corn out of the cows poop! It is considered Normal Agriculture Process. Had me nervous for a second. That is good news and I did not think it was a problem. Last day of season last year we had 11 hunters there and shot 53 Mallard Drakes and 2 Spooines Drakes. Yes, the guys wanted the 2 Spoonie Drakes. Great shoot espicailly since it was the last day of season. Also, we hunted probably half mile from where the cattle where fed. We did not hunt in the feedlot because did not want to spook cows. Pretty amazing though seeing several thousand mallards standing on dry ground in the middle of the cattle...

The Regulations
The regulations governing the hunting of migratory game birds are found in Part 20 of Title 50 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
The regulation specifically dealing with baiting is found in 20.21 (I).
This regulation states: “No persons shall take migratory game birds by the aid of baiting, or on or over any baited area.
”Baiting“....baiting shall mean the placing, exposing, depositing, distributing, or scattering of shelled, shucked, or unshucked corn, wheat or other grain, salt, or other feed so as to constitute for such birds a lure, attraction or enticement to, on, or over any areas where hunters are attempting to take them”
Feed lots or ag areas where cattle are fed grains that could be attractive to waterfowl, or are present in the cattle feces, can and do ATTRACT WATERFOWL. It is for THAT reason that it IS ILLEGAL to hunt there.
You MAY have an argument that you MIGHT win in front of a judge in fighting your charges by both State and Federal wardens. Do you really want to go there?

Well Darla from Lamar specifically told me that as long as it is normal agriculture process then it is ok... Also, we do not hunt right there anyway but about half mile away...

Cappy, I believe you are emphasizing the wrong part of the statement. The emphasis in this case should be at the foreend, and since the hunters are not placing, exposing, depositing, distributing, or scattering, the remainder should not apply.

The feed is not there to attrach the ducks, so how can it be baiting? The feed is for the livestock, what's leftover or ran through cannot be helped. How they could regulate that, I have no idea. What's there by nature is not baiting.

I can see it now...
Judge: What were the ducks eating? Defendant: Dookey Judge: What? Defendant: Cacca Judge: What? Defendant: Sh&t! Judge: And you still want to eat them!? Dismissed!
However, the first part of the reg is what clears them. And as far as the second part, I don't see anything in there about digested corn. lol I don't see how it is any different than hunting a freshly cut field.
