I used to bow hunt a lot in the 80's, and have just recently decided to get back into it. I just bought a bow out of the classified that came with a release. Tried it, but it just feels awkward. I don't feel as in touch with the string like I do with my fingers. Was wondering what everyone here uses, fingers or release?

I started also with finger release back in the 80's. Tried a release and it felt really awkward but once I used it enough I was a lot more accurate with it than without. Give it a chance and you will like a release. I did try different variations and found one that I was the most comfortable with.

Yeah, I was slow to come around to the release. I used to shoot a lot back in the 80's and early 90's. I shot very well with just my fingers. I figured the release was just another piece of equipment I did not need, almost gimmike. Well I finally tried my buddies and I was amazed at how easy it was to use and it did actually increase my accuracy. I never went back to my fingers. Try some different ones out and I bet you find one you really like. Good luck either way.

You will be much more consistent w/a release....I almost feel like I'm cheating....almost;) Another vote for Scott releases. I love mine!!! Regards, Scott (not affiliated)

I was there too. Get you a Fletchunter and you will be fit for life. My accuracy was good with the fingers. Groups went way down in size with the release. I still practice with my fingers and I have a back up release so I can be sure all bases are covered. Had to go to the fingers once and the deer died.

Ok. Been trying this mechanical release..... It's killing me. I can't find a comfortable, repeatable hold. Do I need to shorten my draw length? I can hold the same place everytime with a glove, but can't seem to find the spot with the release.

Sounds more like you have changed your anchor point with the release. Until you find the point you want it will be tough. Are you hitting the wall with your fingers or the release?

use what you feel comfortable and can accurately shoot with,if it's bows, rifles, whatever. . . . I've never shot good with a bolt-action rifle, and just recently used a release because the fingers ain't what they used to be,and you just can't find a quality finger tab anymore use what works for YOU and don't worry about the other folks

Your anchor point should not change to much from fingers to a release. It will take some getting use to. I started out shooting fingers back in the early 90's. Then when bows started getting smaller and shorter I switched to a release. Get you a good release that will help. Look at the Tru-fire brand, I am very happy with mine.
Once you find your anchor point you will love that release.
Where is your anchor point with fingers?

I shot finger's for 20+ years before I switched to mechanical I could probably switch back and it not bother me much, but I'd, much rather shoot a mechanical you're more accurate and it's easier on you're back and shoulder.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Sounds to me like you need a kisser button on your string. Anchor point will then be the same regardless of fingers or release. I use one and love it. Kisser just goes in the corner of my mouth every time.

I have always used fingers since I was a little kid. Releases feel awkward and dangerous to me. I would stay with what is most comfortable to you.

I prefer the mechanical release, but that's all I've ever used. I think it's like most things...personal preference.

A mechanical release improved my shooting instantly! I'm not sure what brand or even 'type' they call it but it has a wrist strap and a trigger... not the plastic thing with finger grooves and a button.

I've offically given up on releases. I've tried a couple different ones, but I just couldn't find a comfortable, consistant anchor point. Sticking with the glove. My pointer finger anchors at the edge of my mouth, 6 shots inside a 2 1/2" circle so I'm happy.
