My wife surprised me a couple of weeks ago when she took me to pick out a Lab puppy for Christmas. My wife is a heck of a woman; she did her research on Labs, breeders, etc, and she did well, I think.

We pick our new girl up weekend after next (on the 20th), so I've been reading "Game Dog" by Wolters and putting together a list of stuff to buy for the new puppy to have on hand to welcome her home. Before I drop the bucks on the supplies, though, I thought I'd check with y'all to see what is suggested for bringing a new puppy home. Crate, bed, collar, toys, etc...I'll need it all. I realize that I don't need everything on the first day home, but I am taking the entire week of Christmas off just to be around the house with her and want to be prepared.

I've been reading the recommendations here on puppy food, but it's hard to make a decision. Has anyone tried Muenster? Good or bad?

I apologize for not doing more searches here for the info, but time is limited. I am hoping for some specific recommendations from y'all to consider.

I'll post a picture of her when she gets home with us....I am really excited, if you can't tell.

Thanks in advance.

Some ofthe most important things in my mind are as follows:
1. A crate for the pup. When the dog is young it will need a place to be when you can't watch it. This will help with potty training and help keep you sane when you need a break. I like wire ones for the house and so does my pup. She seems to like to look around.
2. Dedicated toys not socks and towels. If you start off young with it's own toys it might save you some shoes or table legs later.
3. Get more than one author's book. Walters is nice but a little out dated. There have been a lot of refinements on his techniques over the years. Evan Graham is a name you hear all the time in the dog training world. There are others but can't think now.
4. The best food you can afford. Find the best food even if it is just while the dog is a pup. Bone and muscle development are crutial. If you can afford to feed the best forever at least try to feed while they are young. There should be no grain(ie corn, rice, wheat...) in the first five ingredients.

Hope that helps some

Looking at the different food brands from other posts and then looking at those companies' puppy foods, I didn't see one that did NOT list grain as one of the first five ingredients. I want the best for her...

Thanks for the suggestion on the crate. I had in mind one of the plastic ones that might offer more privacy/security for when she wanted it.

I already picked up a puppy bumper and planned on dog specific toys for the same reasons you mentioned.

And before anyone piles on and reminds me this is a dog, I know it. Having had a Lab when I was a kid, I've been looking forward to the adventure again for several years. I want to do this right and end up with a well behaved member of the family.

Thanks for the info.

Have you checked out Innova dog food? The only grain in this food is barley and rice. No corn or crap in it. Once he is adult Im switching him to Innova EVO its completely grain free. Just my .02 cents. check it out. And congrats!

This is what I feed. The dry, not the wet kind. I am no expert, but I used to feed Purina One, switched to this stuff and my dog LOVES it. That has got to be a good sign. He now scarfs his dog food as fast as he eats table scraps. He used to pick in his food and eventually eat it. Avoderm is a good choice, but a little pricey, between 40 and 50 bucks for 30 pounds.
