My lady has a 5 year old lab who has been living with her parents for about 2 years. She can do just about every basic command as far as sit, stay, heel, and shake etc. She is a great dog always behaves well. Would it be worth my time to work with her this summer on retreiving some ducks? Since she is past the best learning age would it be worth my time? Thanks.

Tuoms is on the right track. I would say start with a cap gun first. See how she reacts. I am sure she will not care one bit. then take her somewhere you can shoot a shotgun. if that works make the retrieving fun for her and see if she enjoys it. Good luck.

Thank God for each sunrise that you get to watch and take nothing for granted.

start with capgun right as you are giving her food or a treat. so she associates loud noise with fun. Just like Duke said make it fun for her for a while. have fun.

You are wrong. You can teach an old dog new tricks up Just make it fun like everyone else said. The worst case scenario she won't be a good hunting dog; never hurts to try!

A great trick I learned about breaking a dog of being gun-shy. Start by taking a pot and a wodden spoon. When you feed your dog, start hitting the pot with the spoon. lightly at first. As the dog gets used to it build it up (SLOWLY) to there you hit it solidly a few times during the dogs meal. Shouldnt take more than a weak and your ready to start with a 22 or small shotgun. Another good tactic is to take your dog to the shotgun range (when its ready) and while your in the parking lot work on your simple commands. The dog will get used to not paying atention to an abundance of gunfire.

I'm a big ban of the bang cap gun that shots a dummy...

Just have some one start shooting it 50 yards away and move in.

Be patient and don't try to do it all in one day. AND DON"T SART OFF right on top of the dog.

Not a fan of the gun range, i don't want my dog to ignore gun fire, I want my dog to get excited about gun fire and pay attention for the reward that comes from gun fire.

My dog gets so excited about gun fire that I have to put him up when I'm checking my rifles at the ranch or he will try to reteive the target, seriously.

Bottom line, never trust a man whose uncle was eaten by cannibals.-Sen Joni Ernst

I wouldn't do the gun range. What I did with my pup (after using a cap gun around him when he was young) was go out to some land and had my wife get about 200 yards away and shoot a 20 guage. I would throw a bumper right before she shot. One of two things could happen, one is that the gunfire may not bother them b/c they are focused on the bumper or, after a couple times they may look at you like ur crazy because everytime they run after something they hear a boom! the latter was the case with my pup, so I would have her shoot, then calmed him down and threw a bumper. I only worked on it for about 20 min at a time. Went back at it later that day and by the end of that session he was standing right next to me while I was firing over his head. TAKE IT SLOW. If they become gunshy it's almost impossible to get em back. Don't be discouraged if she tucks her tail and runs after the first shot. Keep at it and it should work out for you.

It sure depends on the dog, but you are right, it is too late for "serious" training, just do not expect a lot from the dog and you will be ok. I mean if you like the dog, and want the dog by your side in the blind, than that is cool.

If I were you, I would either 1) get a pro to help you, they will give you solid advice about the dogs potential, and you are probably better off leaving the dog with the pro. Or 2) Join a local HRC, they also will give you some good advice about your dog and help you train your dog.

But if it were me, I would not mess with the dog for hunting. But that is just me. Training a gun dog is hard enough, why start out behind the 8 ball with a 5 yr old dog that has never hunted before. I have pumped a ton of time training my dog who is not even where I would like her to be, and she is 4 yrs old, the thought of training a 5 year dog just makes no sense to me, but that is just me!!

x2

If you want to have her there for fun, sure. But especially with a "someone else's" dog, I wouldn't bother. Now you've got an excuse! "Those guys on the internet, they told me I need to get a dog of my own, can I, can I?" Haha.

My dog snores.

Ha ha, that is a good point, I did not pick up that is his GF’s dog!! Yeah, bring her dog home with a hunting injury and see who ends up in the dog house!! cyclo scared

My dog has had 3 hunting injuries that required her to go to the vet (broken toe, a jammed leg, and a thorn in her foot that got infected). I got an ear full from my wife and it was my dog!!

Like said above, get your own pup, research it first, nothing is better! That is if you are “serious” about a gun dog. up
