I have a Honda Rancher that is out of warranty and am wondering if the best oil would now be synthetic. When I pick up a filter at the Honda shop tomorrow I figure I will ask them. However, I figure that they are going to try to sell me some Honda oil. To me when it comes to regular oil I don't figure Honda oil would be any better than Penzoil, etc.
What do you think -- synthetic or regular??

I have a 2002 Honda 500 and have used Valvoline oil in it since it was new. No trips to the shop to date.

Synthetic oil is fine that is what I use. It is Mobil One for motorcycles as I have a manual shift 450S Foreman and it is made for the clutches in the gear box. Check your owners manual as it should tell you what is recommended for your Rancher.

use whatever oil that the manufacturer recommends as far as viscosity (10w40-10w30 etc.)and by the A.P.I. certifications I've used regular Valvoline brand (non-synthetic)in my 3- wheelers,four-wheelers,motorcycles street and dirt for many years with no problems. If your vehicle has an internal clutch pack, you would surely not want to add any friction-reducing compounds like STP etc.

the main thing to look at is the sae rating on the oil. you preferably will want an oil designated for motorcycle or atv engines. those engine oils have additives with a non foaming agent because it has to lubricate the crank, clutches, transmission, etc. all in one oil.
what oil you use is totally up to you. if you use a standard car engine oil, i would check it more frequently. you can also remove the dipstick ever so often and dab some of the oil on your finger to notice if the oil is starting to turn black or starting to break down. if you notice the oil is foamy when draining, the oil has already broke down and therefore is not lubricating the internal engine parts as needed.
it all boils down to maintenance. just remember, they are machines and will not run forever without maintenance. keep the air filter clean and lightly oiled, correct oil level in engine, gas in the tank, and check the oil in the differentials ever so often and you should be good.

Synthetic, nothing wrong with regular but its a proven fact synthetic lubricates better, flows better and resists thermal breakdown much better.
Yes, synthetic cost more but you only talking about a couple quarts of oil.
So unless the five dollars total extra for two quarts of oil is going to break you, I can't see any reason NOT to use synthetic.

I use Amsoil oil & filter in my Grizzly. Go onto their website, enter your quad info. & it will tell you exactly what you need. Go w/the Amsoil filter, not the Honda one, due to the Amsoil filter filters ALOT better & lasts ALOT longer.

X2 on the Amsoil. I use it on my Honda 450 Foreman, my Kawasaki Bayou, and my Yahama Motorcycle. Great oil, but check for correct type and weight of oil.
