As long as I have been hunting Whitetail Deer I have never had the problem like I'm having this year with the frigging COWS..I'm sick of it..I built a feeder pen out of three strand barb wire with 40" tall hog wire and they walked right through it wrecking my feeder tearing one leg off off the barrel. My question is will the 34"x16' hog panels work with T-post or should I use the 50"x16'cattle panels? No one on the rest of the ranch has the problem that I have had. Thanks..

Man.. Been there had cattle panels up and a big charolis bull bent all the tee-posts.... Sometimes you just have to wait for the next cycle of cows to come through and hope for no bad ones...

Yeah, once they know they can get in, it is hard to stop them. I use hog panel with t-Posts every four feet. It works so far.

I got a T-post puller and pulled up a bunch of old posts from all over the lease. A dozen posts and it pays for itself.

Good Hunting,
Gary

I went with cow panels and cut one side down 3 squares. So far so good. I had to drive re-bar though, t-post won't drive out here.

corn through the feeder and I think I may have figured it out, I had a mineral block in there, so I tossed it out, so I will be back at the lease this week to put the panels up and try to salvage the season...can those jokers step over a 34" panel? or should I use the 50" ones?? thanks for the input guys!!

I plan on placing the panels 40 yds or so to the north of the old pen and only use corn and no blocks..no trees other than mesquite.

put an electric fence around the feeder. once the cows have hit it a couple of times they won't go near it, at least that has been my experience with cows. hang some strands of ribbon on the wire, so they can recognize the wire. after they know what it is, they will stay away from it (it doesn't even have to be turned on).

Use cattle panels make it big enough that the thing is not throwing outside pen or use a mech that spins hard enough to spread out feed. If you really want to keep them away you will have to use about 6 pannels. Overlap one square when you wire and plenty of t posts, they will push in otherwise. Someday I am going to find a cowfree place to hunt. What is real BS is that I know what I charge for grazing on my land, I pay about 3 times that for my deer lease. You would think hunters would get a little consideration.

You know whats crazy man on the other side of the lease one of the hunters has a feeder pen set up with panels and NO t-post just wired together and the cows, pigs never jack with his. I know what you mean about the ranchers and their cows , if we destroyed anything on their place like their cows do our feeders and feeder pens we would be kicked off, this guy has two 320 acre places right down the road that there is no hunting on, like other places that I have leased they would move the cows untill hunting season is over..I don't get it.

Last year, it made me sick to my stomach to find a literally brand new feeder stomped to pieces in the ground after the cows had knocked it over.

We now use cattle panels with T-posts where they join. Luckily, we have about 50 years worth of old baling wire laying around to tie it all together. So far so good. If the pen is too tight or the corn is thrown too close to the edge, the cattle are going to lean on it, so we expanded them out this year. We haven't had any trouble with cows trying to get over the panels.

I wouldn't use hog panels. They are so low that the cows can get their heads over it and really start to lean on them.

try building your pen in a circle we had to start doing that for a hog problem we had. the hogs just walked around the outside in a circle. I have seen our cows do the same thing - i don't know maybe they think they are going to get closer on the other side. I know the hogs always picked on a corner to get in once we rebuilt the pens the hogs just made a trail around the outside,

When all is said and done if you want the probem solved for good, find you a well designed and built winch feeder. The problems that you describe are exactly the reson I sell many of mine.

Just finished a 48' X 32' pen for a guy yesterday. His original got wiped out in a flashflood earlier in the year. We were able to salvage some of the original panels and T-posts. The only thing left to do on this pen is put chicken wire around the bottom becaue the ranch has goats. The young goats put their heads in the squares and then can't figure out how to get their horns back out.

These pens will keep everything except coons out. In the real world I have not seen were round pens are really any better than square, rectangular, or even octagon pens for keeping non-target critters out. The bottom line is they have to be staked well with t-posts and don't skimp on the stay wire.

Eventually any pen without t-posts will end up being pushed in so that the hog, cow, sheep, whatever can get to the goodies. It's a matter of time.
