I have a late 70's 3x9 Weaver scope. After passing on a 200 yd shot because I just needed a closer look, I got to thinking I'd like a 4x12. After some online scope study, I ran across people saying for hunting deer a 3x9 is all you need. 4x12 and 4x16 was for target shooting. I don't get it. More magnification to help me see seems like a no brainer. Not that it's going to stop me from getting a 4x12 but is there something I'm missing?

Having your eyes checked is some great advice. I used to go with the flow, but about 5 years ago I lost all vision in my left eye. I see the eye Doctors, yes with an S as in Doctors all of the time. I now have to always get my glasses adjusted as my right eye sight changes. About September I took my rifle out to shoot it, the scope would not focus or zoom in correctly. I went and had my eyes checked, new glasses etc. the scope is now perfect, same scope, just different glasses.

Thanks for the responses. Eyes should be okay, checked once a year. I stepped it off and it was 200 + or - 5 yds. It was my binoculars that got me to thinking. They are 10X and I was thinking I wish I could see the deer as well with my scope as the binoculars. I shot the gun again today and my group was close enough that even with a 1 to 2 inch drop at 200 I still would have killed the deer. Maybe I needed a confidence boost.

light collection is also a big factor. when you compare two scopes of differing quality, nine power will not look the same in both objectives.

If your going to upgrade I wouldn't stop at 12. With the technology today the 4-16 is great. Most of the time mine stays on 4 but if I want to count points i can twist up the magnification and its good to go.

If the money isn't there, just practice a bit in a range situation for 200 or more yards.

I prefer high mag, too! 3x9 doesn't cut it for me either!

3x9 ought to be plenty for deer hunting. However, optics have really improved in the last 30 years.

I have the same scope as you. About 5 years ago, I finally got a Leupold V III X in 2.5 to 10. I really can't tell enough difference to justify the price. I have found that my best friend is a good pair of binoculars.

I tend to lean toward higher power optics too. Most of the time a 9x will do just fine. But there are those times when I find a 14x-18x to come in handy. And for those times, I like having the capability. I have one 24x, but it's all but useless unless the lighting conditions are ideal. It rarely gets turned up past 18x. So I'd personally consider anything over that to be overkill, for me anyway.

I say get what you want. If it's too much power, you can just leave it turned down a bit. But always have the extra x for when you want it.

Do what you want. there is no "deer hunting magnification."

I have a 4.5x-14x on my deer rifle and woudlnt change it to satisfy no one. People can say what they want, but i almost never miss.

I will be checking out new scopes based on everybodys input. It could be a higher quality scope than I have now might make the sight picture better in 3x9. I know that even years ago my scope did not measure up to my uncle's Redfield but it was always good enough. However if 12x or 14x look better to me I'm getting one. Thanks for the input.

Leupold 3x9x40 is all I put on guns. I think they are the best "average" scope out there. There are better, but to me they are perfect.

The fact that it was such an old scope was probably the reason you couldn't see the deer well. 9X in quality glass is all you need.

Try a good set of Nikon zoom binoculars. I have the high powered Action series with zoom. My son loved them so much, I had to buy him a pair to get mine back.
