Has anyone tried out the new Hevi-metal shells? I am not sure how they are different from the Hevi-shot but the 3 inch #2's sure bring down the cranes, dropped a couple today at 50 yards. Just curious.

Hevi Metal is a duplex load. Information from those who have broken the shells down found around 2/3 steel to 1/3 hevi shot with the hevi shot pellet smaller to best match the ballistic of the larger steel shot.

The advantage isnt that you can bring down bigger birds with smaller shot like with hevi shot. You buy based on what you would get in steel shot...the part that is hevi shot are much smaller to do as Sniper John suggests above.

The only advantage I see is that doing this would provide for more dense pattern...but if you can bring them down with regular steel is it worth it to buy this stuff? I don't know because I don't know the price.

I'll probably get a box and field test it but Hevi shot IMO isnt worth the cost.

I didn't realize it was a mix of steel and hevi shot. Cost-wise, the stuff isn't much more expensive than my usual Winchester Dry-loks, I bought a case for ~$19 a box but it seems to pack a little more downrange punch. Maybe it's just my dead eye aim hammer
