I was hunting with my dad on his lease in Mason county. We were in my great uncles blind he called the “pig pen”. Basically a half circle of logs piled up to conceal you sitting on the ground. I was 7 at the time and couldn’t sit still. I kept digging at my butt and Dad kept after me to be still. After about 2 hours of this, I got up to see what was irritating me. Turned out to be an arrowhead or spearhead. About 5” long and 3” wide. I killed my first deer, a spike about 30 minutes later. I always accused my uncle of planting it there, but he would never own up to it. He had a lot of arrowheads and he knew I wanted to find one. He took it to the grave with him if did plant it

Found my first arrowhead while sitting at my bench in front of my trailer putting on my snake boots, saw a small bit about a dime size of a shiny rock barely breaking the surface about 3' in front of me, noticed some chipping on it dug it up and found a real nice point up

Walked up on a coffin on a creek bank one morning. Someone had beat a hole in the top with a axe or something, to open it and there were a few large bones close by! FREAKED ME OUT!!! Had the sheriffs office and medical examiners out to see what was going on... They couldn't say if it was foul play or anything "to me" but they took it with them and said the bones were from a cow.... Strange eek2

All you folks talking about Parker and Mackenzie might enjoy this book on the history of the Comanche; Empire of the Summer Moon

I learned a lot about the early days of TX and how dominant the Comanche were. It was a good read, lots of detail but not stuffy or super academic. But well researched. Check it out!

One of my weirdest/luckiest experience while hunting would be finding my friend's necklace that she lost when we visited our local hog hunting ranch 6 months ago. It wasn't that expensive or fancy of a necklace but she was so happy when I accidentally found it.

So what was in the coffin?

Two stories. Both in Montana. At my favorite, close to town mule deer spot, I would hunt a very steep coulee that was often overlooked by everyone. Everyone would drive past it to get "out into the countryside and mountains", but never took the time to glass it. I shot my mule deer 4 years in a row on opening day in that coulee, sitting about 100 yards off the road and looking down in. The last year before I moved to Texas, as I walking to the truck, I found on old green glass bottle the size of a milk just buried in the dirt. Not cracked or anything with a threaded cap. Cleaned up and in my kitchen to this day. Second was returning to a buddys truck after scouting for bear. 20 miles from the highway and 40 miles from cell phone service. We found the word "Hi" with a smiley face smile written in blood on his drivers side door. We never saw another truck or person out there and never could figure it out.

I suddenly lost some of my urge to go bear hunting...

Back in 1980 or so, hunting for trout (if that counts). We were driving down the Gulf Beach on Matagorda Island and stopped at a good gut to fish, opened door of truck and looked down to see this face staring back at me. The only thing visible was the nose and eyes. We dug her up and cleaned her up a bit. Had we stopped that truck anywhere else we never would have see her. Anyway, the guy I was with named her "Mambajimba" and he still has her.
She is carved out of wood and about 18 inches tall.

The place where we hunt jackrabbits is under an Air Force training area. We find the IR decoy flares that do not ignite, a square cardboard tube containing a magnesium Teflon composition. They are fairly dangerous, I drop them down gopher holes and stomp closed.

My families' place is in East Texas and for the last 25 years or so (before we bought it) it was a pine plantation. One day my brother and I were exploring on a 4 wheeler and found a huge and I mean H-U-G-E, cast iron cauldron. Just rusting away in the middle of nowhere, we now use it as a landmark. As in , "where you hunting, Kevin?" "Cauldron stand"

Where we Elk hunt in Idaho, Peruvian's come up in the spring and summer and work for the ranchers herding sheep in the National Forest, these are the oldest markings we have found. Circa 1964.
