Well I'm back in Texas with my tail between my legs. A day or two before I got there the corn hade gotten ripe and most bears moved to the corn fields and rarely came out. Only had two pics of daylight bears and each time at the site I was not sitting at! However, after sitting in the stand one evening for 7 hours I got hungry and pulled some jerky out the pack and had a snack. 30 secs later I went to out the bag back in the pack by feel and could not get it into my pack. I turned to look for the pack and there just two feet from the base of my tree stood a great bear stairing right up at me! After a few secs of stairing at each other he woofed at me twice and bolted into the corn. I was pissed/upset at myself for making nose and moving. So there I now stood in the tree watching the field to see if any corn stalks would move. I figured the gig was up, then I looked back behind me now to my bait and there was his head in my 20" shoot hole I had cut! Completely out of position and now shaking like a leaf he stood throwing his nose up and looking in my direction. He walked passed my lane towards my cam giving me time to grab the gun and sit. As he entered back into my small lane I shoulder the rifle and let one fly. He bucked and took off. Dad showed up 30 mins later at dark and with head lamps were able to find blood. Tracked him 60 yards to the edge of the corn and there was no way we were going in after dark to look. Next morning at first light with a warden buddy and the land owner that let me hunt, the 4 of us picked up blood and went in. Blood was great for 70 yards or so and then it was wipe off blood on stalks. Corn was so high and think you could not see 4 feet on your hands and knees. After finding where he laid 3 times the blood thinned and eventually ran out. We looked for 6 hours and nothing. I am still second guessing my actions leading up to the shot and am still sick to my stomach after losing this animal. Still have not had a good nights sleep. Farmer said when he combines the corn in a few weeks and if he finds the bear he'll grab the skull and send it. I learned a lot this year and found some things I'd do different when baiting bears but over all I am hooked for life! It's truly amazing what damage a bear can do on corn, evident from what we seen and the farmer told us. Here is the bear secs before the shot and then him running off never to be seen again!
