I just got back from the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Louisville, KY.

Here is a quick video I threw together. I am heading out to sight in the ATN Thor on one of my AR15's.

Also, I'll do another side by side video tonight.

Pulsar Apex XD38A = turn the brightness control down

ATN Thor-HD = turn the contrast control up. (((if I can find that contrast control)))

Couple of pointers, if you connect your scope to a TV monitor with a hdmi cable, you will see the menu appear on the TV screen and it will be much easier to see and record everything.

Second, the contrast and brightness are two different things. The brightness will only control the brightness of the display. Whereas the contrast control the output of the image.

Finally....I poured through the manual and found the contrast control in the manual under the Thermal drop down.... I'll check on the Thor in a little while.

If this has changed in recent software updates or newer thermal units, I stand corrected.

I performed the NUC per the instruction manual. Lens cover over the unit. Also, the unit will NOT calibrate if it is attempted uncovered.

OK sounds good. I know with my current (read that as older model) thor if I cal with the lens open, it will create a terrible double image and make the scope not useful.

There are several units you don't have to do this with, most notably Pulsar and Armasight. I am not a fan of auto-NUC however. The Armasight takes way too long between auto-NUC's (first thing I don't like about auto-NUC) and you end up manually NUCing anyway. You do not have to cover the lens to NUC an Armasight, either with auto-NUC or manual. The thing I like about the Pulsar in this function is the semi-auto NUC. You don't chance auto-NUC occurring at trigger squeeze (which is the second thing I don't like about auto-NUC). There is one easy to find button on the top that you NUC it with and it is quick. Like the Armasight, you don't have to cover the Pulsar lens.

As opposed to Archer, I don't mind manual NUCing if it is setup right. With an IR Defense it is completely manual. You flip the lens cover down with your pinky and operate the NUCing with your thumb. It becomes second nature in no time and you have complete control. Plus, the IR Defense has the best sight picture on the market, period.

Talking strictly about the function of how a scope is NUC'ed, give me the Pulsar design every time.

OK....ATN ThOR-HD mounted on my AR15 Rifle.

***************NEWSFLASH*****************

I discovered that there is no CONTRAST CONTROL on this ATN ThOR HD Unit that I am testing..therefore, it is a MOOT POINT to try to do another side by side comparison with the Pulsar Apex units.

OK, take the SD card out and put the file in Windows Movie Maker, see if that works.

i don't think the sound works well in Windows Media Player.

Wait wait wait... ATN shipped a thermal unit that doesn't have contrast control ????

That's vital to image tuning between black hot and white hot !

What a glaring oversight!

I think based on this information, the lack of sound, the white line across the screen and the fact that the unit is new that I've figured out what HD stands for in the model name:

Have Doubts

I mean it isn't as though the original Thor line was a slouch or a poor performer so it just goes to show what cutting costs can do to a model line - not very "awesome" in my opinion.

Thanks for the details OP

Scary stuff right there

Windows DOES NOT like the video format that the ATN records in.

http://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/cloud-converter#

Use the above website to convert the video file to MP4 and you will have sound. Or upload it directly to youtube without editing..

But if you are going to edit. Convert the file BEFORE you put it in windows movie maker.

To counter the no contrast you can re-calibrate the Scope in a matter of seconds that does a great job re focusing on a new target if there is a contrast issue.

Place hand over front of the scope hit the middle button arrow right to the 1st icon which is a brush hit enter and it does the NUC and it takes about 2 sec to re-calibrate.

If it is like the X-Sight, it is Windows Media Player that doesn't play the sound. It has nothing to do with Windows. Try it in Windows Movie Maker. It should work fine.

Windows Movie Maker will not play the sound either from the X-Sight I or X-Sight II, only if you transfer the video from the scope to your phone, and then to your computer. If you go directly from the SD card to your PC thw sound will not play on any windows base players or Windows movie Maker.

Edit: Nope, now I remember I ran it through a file converter... It's been 2 1/2 years. Some of that is getting murky... up
