Andrew, everything comes down to BC and MV. We want as much as we can get in both departments. increasing each usually meana increasing recoil, like my 7 Rem mag pushing 180's. Very high BC pushing the bullet very fast, equals significant recoil abd a prett short barrel life.

I love my 6.5's, and pushing 140's at 2800 fps they are awesome to 1400 yards, and I've pushed em that far. The 7-08 has more BC (with this bullet) but less velocity than the 6.5mm 140 gr. So it gained in one department and lost in another. What that amounts to is the wind holds are close to the same for each cartridge. And that's all that really matters on the range. Plus the barrel life should be a bit better than the 6.5mm.

And I didn't have a 7mm-08, so I wanted one grin

That makes a lot of sense. I am always thinking of the next caliber I want and curious as to why people love certain calibers over others. I have seen a lot of shooters loving the 7mm-08 and always wondered why, this clears it all up.

Remington did us a favor in bringing it to the commercial world, but some disservice has been done with factory ammo. Almost all factory loads are 140gr or less which do not take good advantage of the higher BC bullets available for the 7mm. Like a lot of cartridges Big Green brings to the market this one was not backed that well with quality ammo and bullets for years but was too good to die like some others have and continue to do.

Now for hunting I have never needed more than the 140s but for long range shooting the 160 somethings will do much better.

If you doubt what the 7mm-08 will do in the hunting world, take a look at some of BMD's threads from Kacee's hunting. She is using a 120gr Barnes bullet and has killed some impressive critters. For my own hunting hogs and whitetails are the biggest things I have shot with it but that 32 year old rifle has over 100 kills and all but 2 the animal has fell within sight of the shooter, those 2 it was the shooters fault making a not so good shot but the animals were recovered.

Africa thread

We did bump up to 140gr tsx while in Africa. But all her wt and Muledeer have been taken with 120's

I know that, and it is driving me crazy! It was a stop gap measure until I can have some custom paint mixed up to match. Don't think this rifle aint gonna get some coyote blood on it soon, cuz its gonna happen! Cant go out there with a shiny barrel.

Bout an hour ago I happened to have had 100 rounds with me, this rifle, and some daylight left. I checked zero at 100 yards, had to come up .2 Mil, and rezero. Had calculated trajectory and headed down the range with it. 200 yards, zero, 300 yards .1 high, 400 yards .2 Mil high. I see a pattern developing here.

Long story short, I deducted from calculated as I worked out to 800 yards. Never missed a one, but I want them in the center, and tweaked as I went. Got to 800 and it was so quiet I just had to keep hearing the steel gooooonnnngggg.

In the end I had to add 50 fps to the MV making 2675 fps to make "Shooter" match the DOPE I had just obtained.

So are you saying the barrel is speeding up some? How many rounds down range? How many rounds do you shoot before load development? Did you try anything other than varget? Guess I'm full of questions this morning. Is your twist 1:8.75?

I was going to start with 4064 but also have plenty of varget on hand.

No, the barrel did not speed up. I purchased the barrel from a friend of a friend that put 100 rounds down it. Best deal there is for me. Let someone else get it seasoned.

The optical chronograph is a tool, but it is not the "do-all, end-all" tool for shooting distance. I used Litz's BC andy chrono data to get a predicted trajectory. Well the predicted trajectory was not exactly right. It had me compensating for elevation more than I needed to, which is always eveident when you start impacting high on target. So what I had to do to "true the DOPE" in the ballistic calculator to match what I just shot.

Why is that important? Because if we fast forward to July, what I shot in March is all wrong. Because the air in July will be less dense and bullets have less drag on them, therefore they do not shed velocity as fast, which means they do not drop as much while in flight.

And here is where there is proof that BDC reticles and custom made turrets are all a bunch of huey!

Yesterday after the welding machine got killed and tools rolled up, I decided to try my cold bore shot exercise with the 7mm-08. Figured I'd be conservative and go for 600 yards. Referenced the DOPE chart I made last week (cold weather), dialed up 4.0 Mil, lined up on the 12" plate at 600, held .3 Mil for wind and let it go. Gong, windage was perfect, impacted .1 Mil high.

Well that was easy, lets try the 6" plate. I took .1 Mil out of the elevation, had to back the wind hold down by .1 and let one fly. Ping! woot

Ok, I can go home now.

So far I am digging this rifle and cartridge

Now I need to get some blood on it.
