I am setting up a range at my ranch to practice shooting on. I have about 850 yards to work with. Is there a typical distance to set up the targets? I'm thinking something like 100,200, 350, 500,800 but if there is a standard among other ranges I'll set mine up that way also.

We run 2 targets and 2 benches on skids, can shoot whatever distance you want that way.

I would post this in the rifles, shotguns, and shooting section of the site. There are alot of guys that post there that have done this and could give you answers to your questions. Good luck with your set up.

Thanks Pitchfork, I knew there were a bunch of long range shooters on here. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't respond.

You usually want steel at 100 yard increments from 300 yards and out to verify dope. Anything in between is just more fun.

How many total targets are you planning to have set?

I guess I could put as many targets out as needed. If you guys recommend 100 yard increments to 800 I can do that.

If you are going to be open to the public, go talk to Archie VanWey at Buffalo Sporting Goods 1/2 mile east of I-45 @Hwy 79 in the very back of the strip center on the north side of the hwy. He set up a public range further east off of Hwy 79 near Oakwood some years back. Had more than the usual amounts of fits and starts. Ron

I was asking about the number of targets because I like to have the 100 yard increments, but would like some in between to plink at also. When I set up on our place to shoot, I keep a few "random" targets to shoot at, just to keep it interesting. Good luck

Hang your steel from fire hose or baler belt, not chain. Chains get cut by bullets. Label the hanger or make signs for each target large enough that they can be read from the firing line numbers or letters. 200 is "B" on my range, 300 is "C" and so on, out to 800.

I try to set up my ranges by starting with the shooters position. I find the most elevated position possible. If an elevated position isn't possible, I will build a berm to shoot from. I try to stay away from whole 100's of yards of targets. Instead I look for the lowest spots I can hang a stand. If no low spots are available, more berms. I also try to keep from shooting targets in a straight line when possible. I will try to spread them out if the land permits. The wider the targets are from each other, the better your wind calls will get.
All of this depends on the layout of your land, of course.

I know moa is about 1" at 100 yards. I'm not sure what you mean by moa steel. Do you mean the size of the steel target is 1" in diameter and 2" in diameter at the 100 yard mark?

Do you have any pictures of how you have the targets set up? How do you have your 2-6" targets hanging.

Same as the big ones. 1/2" grade 8 bolts. They'll get hit, so have extra bolts handy.
