Hello all. I'm new to the area and have been looking @ public hunt options around the DFW area. I noticed on the TPWD website the public land maps for many of the private lands leased to the gov. have the date "OSR Sept. 1-9". Does this mean that these are the only days these parcels of land are available to hunt? Couldn't find anything online that says what OSR means, so I figured I'd ask ya'll.

P.S. Been hearing alot of horror stories about public hunting in TX, so kinda worried about getting mistaken for those blaze orange deer... Any tips about certain tracts of land to stay away from? I'm planning on Cado and LBJ grasslands as being my main lands. Don't taze (or in my case shoot) me bro.

I think it is "On Site Registration" sign in at gate kinda thing. I never hunted those property's, but friends of mine have and said they had to sign a register?? But I am just guessing.

That is what I would presume, but I would find out the managing agency for the "lowdown"

On OSR properties, there is a sign with some cards in a box at the entrance. The sign tells you the rules and has a map of the boundaries. You fill out one of the cards and keep it with you. That is your permit. After the hunt, you fill in the harvest survey on the card and drop the card in the box.

No, you can still hunt after those dates. Those dates are the ones they only require you to do the on site registration. After those dates you are not required to fill it out anymore.

Great! Thought I missed the window of opportunity. Seemed like most of these spots were for dove only. Really trying to find good open public land for stalking hogs/deer/upland birds. I'm not much into sitting on my butt next to a feeder...
