I heard that it is good to mow your foodplot because the deer like to eat the short spouts better. I have planted peas and they are not making any just yet. Should I wait tillthe make peas and then mow or will that kill my plants? Im scared to mow and ruin everything Im trying to do.
Any Ideas from the more experience farmers.

No mow! Till you are ready to re-plant it...

Many types of food plots will greatly benefit from mowing at certain times of the year....PEAS are NOT one of them! Perennial clovers, alfalfa, etc. should be mowed to provide new tender growth at certain times. Once wheat, rye (grain) and oats start to bolt in the spring (before making a head), deer will start to leave it alone. You can mow at this time and the deer will start hitting the new growth pretty hard for a few extended weeks. the plants will still head out, just at a shorter level. Your peas will not recover as well, especially this late. I would definitely leave them alone.

If the peas plants are mature you can cut them a little and they will come back, with lots of water...Once they seed out they are done.
But it defeats the purpose to mow them. You plant peas for protien.... the more leaf the better. I'd leave them be

Infact i wouldn't even plow them under in the fall unless the deer have eaten to the ground. i'd just over seed with oats or wheat.

I agree.
If you can scratch the ground enough around them - especially with this weather we've had the past few years - and sow your fall plot, that would be an ideal situation.

when i went to kentucky hunting last year, the deer were all out in the soybean fields. all u culd see was their head. super hard to get a bow shot. we had to find where they were filtering into the fields.
