Yeah 24ga would be awesome...but you obviouly have to be a reloader and get one for the ga in order to shoot it because I've never seen 24ga shells in my life at the store. I've seen them online but that's it.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

I had to find the Fiochi (sp) shells and they weren't too cheap either. I kinda feel into the 24ga and then when I found out it was made in Italy, I sold it.

What's better for Dove, 12 Ga or 20 Ga?
LOL..but honestly I'd say it depends on what you want and who you are. I'd say a 20 would give you more of a challange and often less recoil. You could probably shot better and kill more with a 12. But then again you can shot 7/8oz loads from a 12ga which would be the same as a 20ga only it patterns better and recoil would be the same depending on weight of the gun of course.
I've not dove hunted yet, so it would be hard to comment. Which is why I asked the question.
Now I have shot skeet with a 20Ga Remington and enjoyed how light the gun was. Didn't think about the fact the doves may be more of a challange with the 20Ga.

I think 12 ga. is overkill on dove or quail. A 20 or 28 is really plenty of gun IF you put the little lead balls on the birds.

You could say the same for a .410 or a bb gun for that matter. A 12 just puts more pellets in the air with a bigger and more dense pattern. It doesnt make you a better shot but it does give you more to work with. But you can handicap yourself with a 12ga as well and just load up lite loads.
I'd say the biggest advantage to the 12 is just the flexability and value. You can shoot a wide range of loads from very light loads that are the same size you'd find in a 28 or 20ga or very heavy loads. Also you have more room to play with speeds which is really more important for waterfowling and shooting steel.
For me though it really comes down to being able to get good loads at a good price. You can pretty much get a decent price with a 20ga shell as well but you won't find near the choices.
I really want a 28ga but right now I can't afford to shoot it since I'd either be paying $15/box or need to get a reloader and reload when I have time...which right now I don't.

Hopedale,
What they told you is right. It does not take much to bring down a dove. You can use light 1 oz loads for them and you'll be fine with the 12 gauge.

At $4 a gallon for gas and $6 a box for heavy dove I'm going out in the back yard at first light and shooting them off the ridge of the house with glass marbles and a home made sling shot before everyone else wakes up. (Note to all game wardens reading this. 2 9/16 16ga A5 with really old shells far out in the country is the real deal, but don't tell the rest of the guys on the board.)
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

1963 Browning A5 12 gauge.2-3/4" full choke 30 inch barrel. A little on the heavy side but with the right loads it will reach out and touch those pesky doves beyond 30 yards.

It good that you mentioned choke...when waterfowling I'll put my mod choke and it stays in for the rest of the season...but for dove I'll shoot Mod, Imp Mod, and Full.

You mean I can't hunt the ones in my backyard. Man I just bought the red ryder BB gun with the compass in the stock.
LOL, you should hear the wife when I even talk about dove hunting. She feeds these birds from the time they return from down south, until they return again.
I plan on going this coming season, and should I manage to hit a few, I'll just clean them before she sees them. Wrap them in bacon, add some other seasoning, and throw them on the grill.
(Note for the confused:
my hunting in the backyard comment is called sarcasm. For the definition of sarcasm goto: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm You should key in on the word, "jest.")

Good points Marc but I just like the 20ga as it's a little lighter and kicks less as I'm gettin older hehe
