When I took this pic, I thought it might be a red deer. But now I think this might be a Sambar?

The hair makes it look like possibly a young waterbuck?
John! That's an odd looking critter! It looks like it has stripes! Can't wait to see what it is!
Diane
Not a waterbuck, waterbucks have horns ( don't grow back), that buck in the picture has antlers he is growing out, looks like an eld's deer

I'm going with either Eld's Deer or Sambar....tough to tell for sure from that angle.

I'm not sure what it is, but some of the possibilities require permits to harvest, so you need to be cautious about harvesting any unknown deer. If JP checks in, he should be able to identify it, if it's a Rusa or Sambar. I think that Eld's Deer, Barasingha, and White Lipped Deer require permits.

Not going to harvest. Just spotted it on a big ranch near place on the coast and knew it was different critter than I normslly see.

too big for a hog deer. Maybe Rusa. This is outside POC on the Powderhorn ranch.

I found a specific reference to Sambar on the Powderhorn Ranch in the book Exotics On The Range. I would bet that's what you saw.

if it was on Powderhorn then Sambar- state took over that ranch this year and hopefully within next 2 yrs they'll start doing state drawn hunts there. Ranch also has axis

I didn't know they had Sambar. Cool. I knew they had red deer and Nilgai. Heard about axis, but have never seen one there. This is the first of Ive heard or seen Sambar.

Looks like a Rusa to me. Sambar have round short ears. Rusa ears are lighter colored on the inside.
Sambar are typically very dark colored, poop and grey mixed in.

Finally being an Aussie has come in handy.
That's a sambar, looks like he might have a bit of rusa in him though, hard to say from that angle.
