Turkey hunting advice

I mostly deer hunt and my two boys want to hunt turkey. We shoot them while deer hunting sometimes (live oak county) but they want to hunt turkey this spring. Our place is mostly mesquite and brush with a pasture in the middle, some of the mesquite are quite large on one side of the pasture and not big at all on the other side. There are two tanks with bigger trees around them and several water troughs throughout the property. Acreage of about 2000, we always see turkeys when deer hunting or at least hear them. Whats the best way to find out where they roost? What would be your recommended setup?

You'll have to do some scouting, If your feeding year round at some point they will more than likely make way thru feeder area. Check along the tank areas for sign. They will water just like other game. Work close to those travel routes and your chance of success will increase. Don't know your area so you'll have to figure out how aggressive or passive to be with calls

They probably roost in the tall trees, that would be the first place I would look. You can use a coyote howler or owl hoot call to get them to gobble.

The usual way to find a roost is to listen for them at first light. You can also tell which way they tend to go when leaving the roost by listening to them after they fly down. Set up is in a spot in the direction they are going, that they'll have to come to in order to see your location.

I'll give it a shot, I've been hunting this place for 6 years and never saw one in a tree yet. There are a few spots where I usually see some all the time, I'll set up there in the before daylight and see what happens.

Be sure and give them some room until you know exactly where they are roosting. Turkeys can be finicky about their roosting areas. Turkeys are also known for changing their roosting and travel areas from winter to spring/summer. If you have feeders, check for droppings, tracks, and feathers. Fill them if they are empty.

Good advise Art, I would also say to check shaded areas near water, they like to lounge during the day in places like that. I have set up near places like that and killed several nice toms mid day. Most important have fun, life's short.

I like to "put them to bed". Do some hen calling before dark, listen and find out where they are roosted.
In the morning setup early in the dark near an open area. They like to be seen strutting their stuff so get your decoys if you have them set out early in the pasture area nearest their roost without getting busted.

Got two spots I'm confident they roost in only problem will be sneaking in without spooking them. I won't be able to make a trip until early April, hoping their still wide open and I'm not to late.

Early April should be perfect. Hens will start laying and nesting and toms will be lonely.

Don't over call and don't get too close to roost.

One of the roosting areas is near a big pond/tank and there's a pasture 200yds from the roosting area which is where I plan to set up.

They will leave the roost and head to the fields. Find the wood line that leads to the field and hunt on the wood line at the edge of the field or the corner. Put your decoys out where they will see them in the field and they will come to you.
