Looking for an affordable spring hunt for my 10yr old son

Looking for an affordable spring hunt for my 10yr old son - 02/17/17 12:11 AM

I'm looking for a place to take my son this spring within 2 hours of Grapevine. I have no desire to hunt, but do want to guide him and take care of the calling and decoy placement. I've looked pretty hard, but with the prices of some of the outfitters I just don't think i can swing it. I'm definitely not looking for a free hunt, but could pay around $100-$150 per bird. We would not require lodging if the weather is nice, we could pitch a tent and fire up a grill and be happy. Any help or contacts would be very much appreciated.

With the popularity and cost of turkey hunting these days, it's become a pony up, or pony out business.

Yes Gamblinman its popular and costly, but for a single dad trying to get his son outdoors, I believe it's achievable. I definitely don't want to be on here asking for help, but the situation is what it is. There are good people out there that'll help a kid with an affordable hunt. To "pony out" is not an option!

Gamblinman is a good man and don't think his intentions were to be demoralizing or to talk down to you in any way. He was merely referring to the fact that everyone wants all that they can get and then some in today's times for all of the headaches that they have to deal with. I would take you for free if I actually had my own property to hunt with you on. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to see a young hunter achieve their goal and to continue our heritage. Hope you find something and you have success.

I meant nothing demoralizing...I apologize if it came across that way. I'm just as frustrated as you with the cost of turkey hunting these days. That was the intent of my comment...showing my frustration too. When I started hunting turkeys in the early 70's, very few hunted them and knocking on a door about anywhere got me all the hunting land and birds I wanted at no charge..in fact, I was welcomed by many farmers to remove some of them. That has certainly changed with the popularity growing leaps and bounds in the last 20 years. I'm fortunate enough to be retired and able to afford to go.

I don't see the hunts that are usually at LLano but there are a few listed now but they may be a little far for you. TYHP.org

Depending his age and if he has had Hunter Education the Texas Youth Hunting Program might be an option. It is open for youth ages 9-17.

http://tyhp.alamark.com/youth-hunters/youth-hunt-schedule/

Price is inline with your OP and includes place to stay and food for you both with hunts Saturday am and pm and Sunday am

I will be helping out at the Boerschig hunt with TJack28 and a few others from here, but think the signup date for that one may have already passed and is a long way from Grapevine.

Booner1, thank you
gamblinman, All good, no offense taken. I understand the demand, Its no different than the deer lease prices blowing up, someone will always pay it! The hard working ordinary folks like myself don't stand a chance. My post was made with sincerity, not desperation. Like stated in my original post, I have no desire to hunt, I've killed several turkeys in my early hunting days. I'm looking for hi 5's with my boy and great harvest pictures to remember the hunt when he grows old.
