Turkeys Released in Anderson County-pic - 12/23/15 05:34 PM

Here is a pic of some of the Turkeys that were released by TPWD as part of the reintroduction program in Anderson County. Our lease is south of Bobcat Ridge (High Fenced) where the Turkeys were originaly released. We frequently see this group of 3, a group of 8-10 and one lone tom.

Good to see that.

Restocking program in Nacogdoches county was pretty dismal.

Hopefully TPWD is getting 'smarter' about it.

More habitat assessment needs to be done before releasing more birds and the utilization of 'Super Stocking' would be beneficial.

Turkeys have a LOT going against them in Deep East Texas, so CAREFULLY picking prime areas to re-establish their numbers is paramount to their survival and success of the program.

We're not in east Texas, but only had a few turkeys here and there for years. Kids got into spot lighting the raccoons and skunks several years ago and ever since we have seen an increase in turkeys, in fact they are actually roosting on our place now. I know it's not the only factor, but I'm thinking it sure didn't hurt taking out some of the critters raiding the nests.
