Help please!! - 04/23/12 11:15 PM

I'm new at turkey hunting & I have a big Tom on my place but it dosent seem like he is responding to my calls any more. Is it to late? Did he bust me to many times? What happened?

Turkey get smart over time. If he has heard your calls enough times, he will ignore them or refuse to come in. Try a different call of different call types. Roost him at night without calling to him and then be ready in the morning with soft yelps or purrs, not strong aggressive calling. Use decoys if you have not before or don't use them if you have before...

Good advice from Scubaarchery. Will add by now gobblers have heard a lot of calling usually. I have killed a quite a few late season call shy gobblets using mostly clucks

Well I have a little update. I got tired of sitting so I jumped out of the blind and went to check the hog feeder for any action and he stated gobbling about 40 yds from me, so I tried a little stalk and found were there are roosting (I hope)! It's only about 50 yds from my blind. I only know how to yelp w/ my mouth call but have some calls on my iphone. I have a hen decoy he has not seen yet. What do you think?

I say it is worth a try, 50 yards is close to the roost, I like to be at least 100 yards from the roost. If they see anytbing from that roost tree they will often sit there a long time or go the other way

Ray Eyes suggests that you call to the Gobbler. Try making some Gobbler yelps. They are territorial, this might just bring him in. Worth a shot. Let me know if you try this and what happens. Looking to give this a try here in PA. next week. Good Luck.

light hen calls and deep gobbler clucks can close the deal a lot of the time. Have seen/heard it where a not dominate gobbler would not gobble but cluck when with hens, figure he had his butt kicked, and gobbling would attract unwanted attention. Deeper cclucks can be made with raspy mouth calls with some practice.

If you have the Primos App for your I phone it works like a champ I plugged in a 20 ft cord with a speaker on the other end and drove a gobbler crazy the other day.
Good Luck

+1 However if all else fails stage a Turkey fight. Slap your hat on your leg to mimic the sound of wing flapping and with your mouth call do an aggravated purr which kind of sounds like this on the linky

Go here then scroll down

I can do this with a diaphram mouth call and its hard to explain but hold your lips together and blow air out to get the idea. Now use your mouth call holding your tongue up on it and against the back of your top teeth. Do this 4-5 times then add some fast loud clucks then back in with the aggravated purr. Good luck.
