5 down this weekend! - 03/06/16 09:28 PM

I was invited by my good friend Cameron to do some pig hunting with him. He had met a corn farmer in the area that just planted over 1,000 acres of corn. He’s hunted it a couple of times and the farmer has already seen how effective hunting at night can be. and has welcomed him with open arms.

I was using the W-1000 for spotting, 12.5” suppressed 6.8, Anvis 9 goggles and a LWTS thermal clip-on in front of a Vortex 1-6HD. Cameron was using a 12.5” suppressed 6.8, Anvis 9 goggles and shooting with a Dbal D2 IR laser, He’ll be getting a thermal scope soon, LOL!!!

We started in a 500+/- field and got there around 8:30pm. I did as I always do when hunting corn fields, park in a position to where I could see most of the field with the W-1000. We caught up and BS’d while scanning every 10-15 mins. Sometime around 11:00 we spotted a sounder of 13 that looked to be about 600 yards away. We grabbed our gear and started the walk. It was pretty dark out and it seemed like we walked a long way before we picked them up with NV. Every so often I would check with the thermal and they weren’t really moving much.

Once we got within range we set up. The sounder consisted of good sized sows and about 10 piglets. A large sow was at the rear of the sounder which was to our right and I had Cameron take her because he was shooting with the IR laser and it was the closest pig. I got on the other sow which was at the front, our left. 3….2….1….bang. The lead sow dropped DRT and most of the group started running to our right. As we were tracking them the large sow that Cameron hit got back up and starting running. My first shot was a little to far back on her, corrected and 2nd shot anchored her. I got on another target and “click”. I started working on my issue and told cameron to keep shooting that I had a malfunction. As I am trying to figure out what is wrong in total darkness all I can hear are shots and thuds. LOL. Cameron ended up getting 3 of the small ones while they were running with the laser.

I fixed my rifle issue, we piled them up for pictures and then started walking back to the truck. On the way back we realized that the pigs were much farther away than we thought. When we got back to the truck Cameron realized that he had on a fitbit watch. Total round trip which included a little pig dragging was 1.98 miles. The W-1000 picked them up without a problem. After that we headed home so it was an overall good hunt.

We both are using the Team Wendy EXFIL LTP. I have used the cheap airsoft and the OPS Core Fast helmets but the Team Wendy is much more comfortable to me
