Door on newly placed trap

Do I leave the door open for a few weeks? Or just put it out there and see what happens?

Leave door open, let them get use to the trap. Keep it baited, as much of human smell away (rubber boots with cow dung on them, rubber gloves, don't smoke or chew aroun trap) had experience with this. Seem like when we shot the pigs in the trap took awhile for others to use. We also had fence panels on the floor of trap, found out it was better to cover the bottom with dirt so the pigs didn't have to walk on. Just my opinion.

Depends on how many hogs you're trying to catch. If its just a couple, go ahead and just set the trap. If it's a lot, leave it open for a bit.

What type of trap? How large?

If it's the standard box trap, roughly 4'X4'X8', then you might leave it open until you see that something is going in and then set it.

If it's a corral trap, leave it open for a couple of weeks.

Best bet, set a game camera nearby to see what's happening (how many hogs enter, how many wait outside) and use that information to tell you when to set the trap.

It's a standard box trap. I put it in place today with the door open and baited. A game camera is placed nearby. Hopefully it'll get some action in the next week or so.

When I had traps on an old lease I always kept the door wired open when we weren't there and did this initially for a couple weeks prior to setting. I also had a feeder setup right over the top of it in a tree. Good luck.

A feeder over the trap is a good idea. Here's a setup I put out where I hunt. The feed sacks force most of the corn to drop directly into the trap, keeping it baited when I'm not there. I've since replaced the paper bag material with some pieces of plywood.



As a side note, this is a home made feeder I put together out of bed frames and a molasses tub. By the time I bought a funnel, varmit-proof cage, spinner plate, legs, and (at a garage sale) a used controller, I could have purchased a cheap one ready-to-go from Academy. While I enjoy DIY projects, I won't be making another feeder any time soon.

Admittedly, I've built one, too. Caught two hogs that were a little more resilient than my ingenuity. :-) I bought this one completely fabricated. Looks tough enough!

I like the directional "funnel" on your feeder. I'll have to give that a shot.

I've told some people on here about using a one gallon coffee can or similar container to direct the corn down into the trap. I like the noise that an old metal coffee can provides when the corn is hitting it. It's like a dinner bell.
