Skunked by being sunk.

Skunked by being sunk. - 01/02/16 03:06 AM

Well this was a record short hunt left the house at 8:30ish and was done hunting by 9:00pm when my land cruiser sank in a huge sinkhole filled with water.

The crazy thing is I never got off the road! Now the road is just a dirt farm road but still a road we drive quite often to check on the cattle fill feeders ect. There are a few gates and fence lines to rotate the cattle ect the third gate is in a low area were there is always standing water it was muddy there even during the drought. I had just used the same road the day before to kill feeders and such. Normally we would drive this road 10-15mph but this night i was luckily going under 5mph trying not to make noise as I went to check the feeders.

As I approached the gate my truck dropped forward almost vertically throwing me into the steering wheel I gave it full throttle and got the nose and engine up out of the water but was stuck. Now I have locked front and rear axles with 37" Super Swamper tires it is near impossible to get stuck but I sure was. You can see the pelican cases floating in the rear.

After a few minutes of trying I knew I would have to winch out but my door would not open, so I crawled out through the window and instantly was in water up to my stomach. With nothing to attach a inch to I walked a couple of miles to the tractor and drove it back. The problem was even with a 15,000 winch I just pulled the tractor to me not moving the truck. I finally gave up about 5am.

Most of my thermals, drone, ect were in pelican cases and stayed dry but I lost my expensive video camera, all my camera lenses, thousands of 22lr, 9mm, 40 cal, 45acp, 6.8, and 3.08 ammo. My LWRC Repr with the zeus pro 100mm, the M6IC with eotech and the apollo pro 50mm, and the savage 22lr with the Predator thermal were all submerged for 3-5 hours. They all turned on after recovering them minus the predator so a great waterproof test just not how I had planed on testing them.

Here is my video camera and one of the many lenses lost.

Turns out the hole was 6 foot deep and filled with a type of quick sand. this is where they put in a natural gas line and it looks like the area where they dug up to put it in just collapsed. The hole was rectangular in shape and deep. I do not know if they will be liable or not, if not I only have liability insurance so everything will be a loss. The truck is at the shot getting all fluids, and fuel tank drained. But the whole rear is full of sand now so everything back there will be soaking for several days until i get it next weekend.

Here is a pic of me attaching a chain to the rear wheel the rear of the truck is actualy not in because the front acle is hung up on the ledge if it had gone back it would have been under water to the roof line.

I know I lost my cameras and lenses, my foxpro is shot, the predator thermal a bunch of ammo, Several jackets boots and other things are still buried under the sand. All the lwrc rifles just needed a water hose and the eotechs all turned on, none of the vortex scopes had any issues. Lucky for me everything else was protected by the pelican cases I cant recommend those highly enough.

Re: Skunked by being sunk. - 01/02/16 06:00 AM

Bummer.

Good thing you have a snorkel on your L/C (need to add one to mine) or you might have gotten water into the air filter, then hydraulic'd your engine.

Good thing you were able to get the front of the vehicle through that mess pretty quickly. In addition to having all fluids changed you might want to remove the plugs on top of your steering knuckles to see if any mud and water got into the cavity where your 'birfs' reside. If your seals aren't in good shape that could have happened.

You want to add grease there from time to time anyway. IF they are contaminated and your outer axle seals are not good...the grease and 'goo' will find their way to your ring and pinion and diff fluid.

Hate that happened to you. Gives new meaning to 'IH8MUD', might post over there too if you haven't.

Wow. First of all, glad you were not hurt, and I hope that most of the ammo and kit will clean up. I was trying to load out some hay today and sunk my smaller tractor (70hp) up to the axles in a matter of seconds. Never saw or heard the water, just sank. I had to go get my big tractor to lift and pull. I always worry about driving around in the dark. Hope no permanent damage to your truck.

Thanks will do! May take a while I have been slowly acquiring most of the stuff over the last two decades as I could. So may take a while.

We put a clause in the pipeline easement agreement that the pipeline owner is responsible for fixing any washouts or cave-ins and damage to equipment or livestock. Hope you're not left holding the bag.

Stuff like this scare the crap outa me when I have my dogs in the box on the back of the Mule. They would probably have drowned before I could get them out. And could you imagine hitting that in a UTV? Sorry to hear about you losing stuff.

Land owner lost a momma cow and her calf in a pipeline sink hole last year. He contacted the company and was quickly paid for the loss. I'm sure he had a contract like Hooper...I know your stuff isn't a cow and calf but replacing a registered Angus pair isn't cheap and they paid up quickly. Hope it works out for you.

Dude, that sux. Haven't been on here in a while but like everyone else, glad your okay.
All your toys are "stuff", (expensive stuff), but can be replaced.
I have to tell you, I read your posts and watch your videos always expecting a awesome thrill. I have to ask though, did you ever in a millon years think about something like that happening?
I've experienced charging hogs, being attacked by an owl while mouth calling varmits (screamed like a school girl), see satellites moving across the sky, ran out of bullets, left batteries in the truck, got stuck in the mud, but never a sink hole. Wow, the luck.
I like being out in the dark hours for the "piece time". No phone, nobody, no nothing, just nature. See lots of deer, big bucks. The hogs, coyotes or bobcats are just the bonus for me.
Thanks for something else to think about, HAHA. Really, glad your okay and are back at it.

Not yet still trying to go through and see what is lost and what is still good. Insurance is a no go no flood or sinkhole coverage. I do have video where I drove down the road just the day before with no issues so at least its documented.

Man I have done a lot of off roading rock crawling and expedition stuff where I am off road for a week at a time. Have never ran into anything like this before I'm pretty prepared and the truck was set up right a stock truck would have been under water.

Wow, didn't see this earlier. Very glad you didn't drop the whole truck in, with you in it.

Were you able to get any help from the pipeline company?

Agreed. Would like to hear what happened with getting help from the pipeline company still, if he feels like sharing that part of the story.
