Quick question about a call

Quick question about a call - 12/31/15 03:36 AM

I'm taking my son out to try and call in a coyote tomorrow afternoon. Probably get set up about 4-430. We will be in NE Texas - about 10 miles east of Lake Fork. My question is, which call/sound do I try? I'm using a FoxPro Spitfire. I'm thinking the Adult Cottontail, but would like any other other suggestions.

Thank you!

Baby cottontail, or baby jackrabbit is great, if it hasn't been over used in that area.

Nope, no luck. Got set up in a field where I know there are some coyotes. My father in law hears them every evening and there was a good bit of scat. I went with the baby cottontail. We got set up about 430 and stayed till dark. Didnt see anything. It was windy, and not very open, so maybe they winded us before we could see then. Or, maybe they just didnt come in. Who knows. Going to give it another try in the morning. Going to try and set up in another place tomorrow morning about a mile away from where we were tonight. Try to get set up about 730 or so give it about 30-45 minutes.

I've only tried to call in a coyote once. It took about 3 minutes with Burnham Bros mouth call. That was about 7 years ago. I guess I should have used that today.

I hope I can make it happen in the morning. I'm having a hard time with the thought of paying $300+ just for my 9 yo to shoot a coyote.

The actual call sound has little impact on their curiosity, though they are very familier with what a baby rabbit sounds like when getting its butt tore up. If your downwind side is brushed in, you could have 10 yotes come in and never see them, rarely have I had one come in all the way without circling down wind.

Another huge factor is their "education", if you are on a place that calls them all the time, they know that routine well by now.

You may be better spending the $300 for a hog hunt, yotes can be a much bigger challenge until you get a feel for it.

BTW, I have never notice high winds to be a huge negative outside of calling sound range, doesn't seem to bother them like it can deer.

A decoy set 30-40 yards in the direction you think they will come from can help big time, this draws their focus to the decoy and many times they won't circle far enough to wind you.

Good luck

Thanks, Western, for the advice. We did not make it out this morning. Hopefully we can give it a shot Sunday morning before church.
