Raccoons - fighting or mating?

i had a window open a bit this evening, and a real commotion started up outside. It was loud, and the closest I can come to describing the sound is that it was a sort of 'chittering'. I grabbed a big spotlight and went out on the front porch, and after a bit I found the source of the sound. It was two big coons up in a tree close to the house. They were moving all over tree limbs, roughly face to face, and doing that chittering. It wasn't sex, but might have been a lead-in to it.

Any of you seen or heard anything like this?

Yeah, fighting is loud and scary sounding. Chittering is more friendly. Sounds like playing to me as well.
