Hog with a head shot

Stirred up a sounder of hog the other day and one of them came running my way so I took him with a Fiocchi rifled slug. Whacked him right between the eyes, and the slug exited his throat. I found it on the ground next to him. He didn't move a muscle after the shot! The slug must have pureed his brain. Never seen such a "dead right there" shot on these hogs, and I've taken a whole bunch of them in the last 10 years.

It wasn't really good shooting on my part. It was 90% luck, and 10% good fortune. He was about 20-25 yards away, heading right at me, and I just did a "snap shot" and happened to connect. He wasn't coming after me or anything, he just happened to run my way in the excitement of the moment. And I happened to hit him in a critical spot, with the right load, in spite of the excitement of the moment. Only the person who does my laundry will know how excited I was. . .

Yeah, Ramsey; it's kinda nice and rather rare to have them drop within their own shadow. As I mentioned, I've busted a bunch of these devils in last decade or so, but never had one give it up completely like this one!

My son and I cleaned 6 of them; 5 of our buddies cleaned the other 11; and all but 3 ended up in the "Hunters for the Hungry" program. The gut piles were put in our "bone yard" and provided meals for a week or 10 days for lots of creatures all up and down the pest/predator/varmint spectrum.

Yep, I did. It was on the ground, right under the exit wound on his throat. I wasn't able to salvage it for another load, though! As you can see, it had a rather rough ride through the piggy.

No, I collect their cutters and make wall plaques and other decorative items out of them. The whole process of getting the skull completely clean and ready for work takes more time than I care to invest!
