Hog Management videos from Texas A&M

Of possible interest to any of you who hunt hogs:

Mark Tyson and Josh Helcel, AgriLife Extension associates with the Wildlife and Fisheries unit at College Station, collaborated with Texas Wildlife Services personnel in compiling the series. Tyson said it consists of an all-inclusive trailer and the following five videos: How to Corral Trap Wild Pigs; Corral Trapping Wild Pigs: A Success Story; How to Box Trap Wild Pigs; Shooting Techniques for Wild Pigs; and How to Snare Wild Pigs.

Tyson said his unit came up with the idea when they realized the need for a comprehensive video resource on feral hog or “wild pig” management.



“With feral hogs in 99 percent of Texas counties now causing upwards of $52 million in annual agricultural damages, managing their expanding populations is a real challenge,” Tyson said. “Our job is to provide landowners with the tools they need to get the job done, and we trust this will be another very useful tool in their feral hog management toolbox.”

Funny how the amount of damage caused by hogs has not changed since 2004 DESPITE a ~20% per year population growth rate.

because there was never a real problem to begin with

I was enlightened when I spoke to an outfitter in west texas

he attended all 'hogs' related meetings between landowners and state/fed personnel
They all claim to have been hurt economically by hogs - to receive aids or subsidies
But they won't allow any hunting on their land

only hog problem i have is getting access to the problem area's... so ta solve the problem bought a $48.00 permit for WMA land & volenteer my time... on video's... Realize their is area's with hog problems, Best wishes on videos....

Well, you pretty much missed the point which was the good folks at A&M who have been recycling data without verification. Their growth numbers don't equal their population estimates. Their damage estimates haven't been updated in more than a decade.

Whether or not farmers will allow hunters on their land has nothing to do with the issue.

Farmers allow hunters on their land 99% of what I hunt is other peoples property. But you need to either know them or have a good reputation with the other ranchers and farmers in the area. Or pay $$$. They do not need hunters going out killing one or two hogs that's not effective unless there is a fee involved.

I have seen a decline in the hogs over the last few years I give credit mostly to the drought. But hunting with night vision/thermal, helicopters, and trapping has made a difference. Several large properties that I hunt personally have gone from seeing hundreds of hogs a week to rarely a hog sighting anymore. Did I kill them all? No but when you hit 5-10 out of a group several times in a row they start to wise up and move off the property.

Hog hunting has also become big business for everyone landowners, firearms manufactures, ammunition manufatures, suppressor, night vision, and day scopes are benefiting from the hog hunting craze. For anyone to actually wipe them out now would destroy that industry not to mention taking away a fun hunt that people can enjoy 24/7 365 days a year.
