Please tell me what i can do Varmints in the city

Hi all, been a while, i've been buys, but now i have a varmint problem and don't know what to do. I live a stones throw from beltway 8 in Houston texas. cement as far as cement can see. However I have a coyote who likes to knock over my trash can and drag the contents of not only my trash but other neighbors in my neighborhood. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt its a grey coyote. First i have cctv setup around my house and while the cameras are crap i saw the gait this little bullish boy trotted down the street one night, then proceeded to knock over my can. later, i just bought a dirt bike small 230 cc yamaha , I was out for a ride one day just dicking around near my neibourhood. there are many waste water transfer ditches near me, and I came accross two of them i believe a male and female. in a field less than a half mile maybe 1/4 mile from the house. not terribly far from me. during daylight. I have a .22 lr marlin but didnt have it near me left it at the house. As far as i know however you cant legally shoot a 22 in the city. Then on the 24th AM at 4 am I was awake and ready. Caught the little grey trash bandit on my can before he could knock it over. I had a shot lined up but could not take it. the angle if i missed would have been back into the neibourhood. he got away from me that day but he knows im there and after him.


What can i do , reasonably to get this sucker , in city limits. ten cents for a round of the 22 i have stacked in the closet is far most cost effective than anything else but I dont want to get into sh*t for being inside city limits.

My hoa is useless, they basically said wait until its more built up and they will leave.

Is it legal to shoot a PCP gamo or benjamin .22 or .17 or .25 in houston texas city limits ? its an air gun ... I could on my off days actively hunt them down. I know about where they are. Is baiting legal where I am and what about snares is that legal?

I know this doesn't answer how to eliminate him, but try dousing your trash with ammonia right before you put it out. I keep a jug by our trash can.

thanks , im long time stalker dont have many posts but i read alot here. Why ammonia ? makes the yote note want the trash ? if it were only that simple, I am in a corner, and theres a large piece of fence missing in the back of this corner , from what i am seeing the boy yote uses that as his exit not entrance though he always comes in down the street from me , which i see on cctv, so he uses the shadows around back of my house and in the back to move down the street, then hits all the neighbors and drags all their [censored] through my place and out the hole in the back. It looks awful and makes the place look so trashy....

I can hit my can with stuff like that but its not going to fully eliminate the issue cause the little wanker will drag all the neibourhood [censored] trough the grass area still

May want to look into a paintball gun and some pepperballs......Legal, and should work. Just a guess though

thanks thats a good sugestion , i was even thinking about when i set out my trash , usually 9 pm the night before hitting any one elses trash can with ammonia before i go to bed lol.. i hate this critter, its leaving huge trash trails all over the place

How bout don't put your trash out till the morning it's supposed to get picked up ...... It's just like a feeder its going go to attract them if it's easy for them to get in to

If you're in the city, you also might see if they have some kind of problem animal control program.

Might try a big live trap.

On the legal side contact the city and see what if anything they may have available. I live in concrete suburbia and see more yotes here, due to the fact they have little habitat. I have observed totes crossing my front yard three times since Jan. The woodline is about 3/4 mile away.

I got a lot of use out of my Sheridan Silver Streak when we lived in Houston. I think that's all I need to say, if you know what I mean.

Chapter 225 townofhouston lists the regs for weapons discharge. Interestingly there is no difference in penalty for airguns, rifles or bows. Any of the three are misdemeanors, $50 - $100 fine plus cost of prosecution. Put a call into the city to find out the accuracy of this.

Sounds like whatever you do to your trash doesn't matter much since they are using your yard for an exit.

How big is the hole behind your place?
If you closed the hole, they would be forced to change to another place to exit.
Hopefully that somewhere else is not thru your yard......

Electric fence.

Use a snare in your back yard then call the city when you catch it.

Invest in a large Live trap.. It will be cheaper than getting fined for discharging a weapon in city limits or killing someones pet accidentally with a snare.

Yotes or fox have never been problem in my neighborhood but feral cats are world of their own! Have rent house down street from me and tenants always bring their pet cat and next thing you know we have number of critters from just one. I have live trap that handles most of work, I like to recycle so they get ride in trap towards my work....40 miles away in middle of nomwhere, yotes got to eat to! Those that wise up to trap I catch in romantic frame of mind and Benjamin 22 cal handles.

Your right , my side yard has a large hole in the back fence that is used as an exit. I bought a larger trash can with better lid and it works to keep him out but the little bastard is still able to get into everyone elses can and then exits accross my yard so i still get trash.

I am at work in south texas drilling a hole when i get back ill look into city and animal control and im going to try chemical warfare ! plus the HOA is going to patch the giant hole in the fence although that will take time but i have it to spare at the moment.
